How many licks can you take with the bludgeoning stone,
Before you start to break away?
When will it be enough?
Can the heart really break this much?
Is it that resilient?
Everybody knows when it’s happening,
Does that mean it’s supposed to get easier along the way?
I hope my time here is more than just the life-altering experiences.
Sometimes it’s all in the details,
The little things you remember that make you smile that secret smile.
The ones you can look back on and say, “That’s mine.”
Nobody else can have that,
More importantly, no one can take it away.
So if, with age, I start to forget your name,
Or sing that song I stopped singing when you weren’t afraid of the dark anymore,
Life has a charm of sneaking up on you that way
Remember me through the little things.
The friend, who was always awake,
The voice that softened even the most frayed of nerves,
The sister who was always a little wiser than she let on,
The daughter who never really grew up,
The one who spoke more volumes with her eyes than she ever could with words.
