It is my good fortune to know
a lovely American woman in Madrid
who picks me up one morning
and drives me into a history lesson
preserved in the art and architecture
of Toledo, the Roman Totetum
described by Livy. I walk
through this ancient capital of Spain
and half-expect to see water spilling
from aqueducts overhead.
I admire the Amphitheater, the mosques
and Moorish frescoes, the twin towered
Bridge of Saint Martin spanning the Tagus,
the Santo Tome church where hangs
El Greco’s Funeral of Count Orgaz,
the nine-hundred-year-old synagogues
that survived the Spanish Inquisition,
the city gate, Vesta Puerta de la Bisagra,
standing since the thirteenth century.
I save the best for last:
my visit to Casa y Museo del Greco.
There I sense his presence
in the subdued Apostle series created
when El Greco was nearly blind,
and later in the signature work of his genius,
the dark, dramatic View of Toledo,
which on this October day looms before me.
but through your poetic tour, I feel I have visited with you instead

If tis isn't the ultimate, it is a very close second. Man, you are a well traveled visitor to Spanish shrines, and the way you have taken us with yo is invaluable. This Old Boy has always wanted to visit Spain...for the reason you helped to satisfy! I am saving this one for reading when I feel cooped up and fragile within my own little existence. Thank you from the bottom! - Bill

Have a blessed and Happy New Year,
