Paris is Purple

Through the bare trees
the late afternoon sky is pale purple,
reminiscent of Paris,
recalling my first encounter
with a sidewalk waiter who nods
when I order a bottle of Bordeaux rouge,
and returns with a bottle of water.

No, I say,
not water--le vin--he shrugs, I laugh
and blurt out
wine, red wine, s'il vous plait!
He smiles and replies, ahhh, Bordeaux rouge.

The demoiselle at the next table,
wearing a purple hat
to match her purple smile,
winks at me above her glass of purple wine,
and whispers, a votre sante.

Her name is Violetta.

She escorts me through the Louvre
where I delight in a new Chagall exhibition,
including his Blue Violinist (wearing
purple pants), spend a few minutes ogling
the Venus de Milo, demonstrate to Violetta that
when walking back and forth in front of the Mona Lisa
her smile and her eyes follow you.

Violetta laughs a purple laugh.

Oh, Gene, wonderfully earthy as always. Haven't we all done this a time or two? The thrill of the chase. Just beautiful, my fine friend.

Blessed be,
Patti

Amusing, romantic, a wonderful slice of a rich past, presented to us like a mouth watering thin slice of the best foie gras...

Gene, these vignettes of your memory are purple with the creative expressions of your fertile mind my friend -- each, so clear in definition and emotion -- a joy to my tired eyes, an extra beat for my aging heart -- a skip in my stumbling steps -- thanks for the memories -- peace and love my friend -- Jon Michael

And I thought Paris wore rose colored glasses... It is a place all its own, but I'll never think of it the same now.

The artist formerly known as Prince would aspire to these
Williamson "lyrics" to compliment Purple Rain, onward to Italy and the speaker towers would lean the leaning Tower of Pisa that much more..."Violetta laughs a purple laugh" and we adore the encore, Paris is Purple...in vino veritas!

Sage

BINGO! Yes, life is so like this... in one place or another, according to mood and experience, there IS a sense of a predominant colour or palette, Gene, well-spotted! Great narrative lines here which live and breathe in anecdote. I've caught the whole atmosphere in a Hendrixian Purple Haze - "'scuse me while I kiss this guy" (well, you know what the French are!) Reminds me of my nephew's experience in Sweden recently... a waiter fetched the Restaurant manager when he innocently ordered herrings... the waiter thought he was asking for heroin!!!!!!!! :)) xx

Lovers of purple reunite. A purple laugh is certainly bubbly and mysterious at the same time. Imagination completes the work of memory in this piece, or at least, this is the kind of feeling that I get when reading it.

Gene - The purple motif you use throughout this poem works splendidly from the practical observation of:

Through the bare trees
the late afternoon sky is pale purple,
reminiscent of Paris,

to the figurative:

Violetta laughs a purple laugh.

You create a texture and an atmosphere for the color purple that lingers. - David

Nice trip to Paris Gene, and of course I love all things purple and Chagall too so this piece is one of my favorite ones. I have one of his prints on the wall next to me; bought it when we went to a M. Chagall exhibit in Vancouver 2 yrs. ago. Hugs, J'nia

Sadly that one needed to get badly hurt to get that purple, but yours beats anything painted, weaved or imagined if it is savored with a bottle of Muscatel Wine (red wine give the willies to my tummy) by the Seine, as one look at the tourist boats going by.

Gene,
This is a painting or rather a series of miniatures come to life in words, well chosen, beautiful words and feather-light images... pictures of a personal intimate gallery, wonderfully evocative and as striking as a mistress smile.
