Avila was my cathedral fix.

I stood in the heart of this monastic center of Spain,
a few short miles from El Greco’s Toledo,
surrounded by churches, cathedrals, temples, cloisters,
palaces, towers, and the River Adaja.

This thousand-year-old walled city, built
on the summit of a rocky hill, was said to embrace
mysticism and history,
art and heroic chivalry.
It was a city of saints and silent warriors.
A quiet city.

Yet the afternoon I stood within ancient Avila,
I was aware only of the honks and beeps and oogahs
outside the medieval walls.

The contrast that you have presented via your verses is most effective in recreating the mood, Gene. Thanks for sharing. Love and peace to you,

The contrast is amazing, old vs. new and to even fathom what it was like. ~ Morgan

i had this same impression when i visited assisi in italy. this ancient monastary cloaked in the quiet, rolling hills of central italy, time-machine whip-lash, lost inside the storied walls and catapaulted back to the plastic present by the annoying whine of tour busses and motor scooters. great piece.

That moment of being one with the special,
this is what this excellent poem is, Gene.
Highly atmospheric, full of love and appreciation
but the distraction of what we've become is all too real.

Funny how the present world imposes on the past. So well penned Gene with great ambiance.

Gene,

Sounds like a very beautiful, interesting place. What a shame the 'quiet' city was ruined by the sounds of an annoying city. Take care.

Hah! Kinda hard to commune with the saints and silent warriors, never mind the mysticism because of progress of mankind, eh? A shame really.

... must have been the wind direction! There is something distinctly stilling and imbuing just by the act of being present in such a place. Spain is literally "thick" with such pervasive atmospheres, I find. In those medieval cities in which the 21st century has been allowed to infiltrate, it feels to me like a mere grubby film across its ancient surface somehow... a dozen or so steps back down some cobbled calle and you could easily have lost again a few centuries and become intoxicated just on the scent alone of history and mysticism. Sounds to me like a re-visit is in order! :)) Karmen Kate xx
