A small laugh,
unrestrained giggle in the dark,
interrupts my leisurely stroll along the waterfront
of this city founded by Phoenicians,
this bright Andalucian province,
this Picasso birthplace.
I linger at a fishing boat
to breathe the air off the Mediterranean.
In the distance I sight a string of Moroccan lights,
my ears attuned
to the lapping of the sea on the Spanish shore
and the animated voices behind me.
Intermittent cries
echo off the pines and palms surrounding
Malaga’s ancient Alcazaba citadel,
excite the night,
young lovers and surf in sync.
Sudden shower, atop
the climb to the shelter of the timeworn Moorish fort,
I am welcomed
by a shiny Coke machine.

You have written a charming and wonderful poem about the tide of life Gene.

with great sensitivity and awareness of history
and present moment...and not just bare history
but its value...and then the jolt of coke
anchors you and all of us in where we are today.
The writing, as always, so so fine.
