What is it that we call the Great Dao?

There is the Dao or Heaven's way

Running above; and there is the Dao

Or Man's way threading its course on earth.

Doing nothing and yet attracting honour

And prestige is the way of Heaven;

Doing and being embarrassed thereby

Is the way of Man who strives to survive.

It is Heaven's way that plays the part of the lord;

It is Man's way that plays the part of the servant.

The Heaven's way and the way of Man are far apart;

They should be clearly distinguished from each other.

As for the Great Dao itself, it is what is out

Of all descriptions, as long as no one knows

And fathomless, it does not undergo any changes.
