Poem Artwork

The flower of life consists of six desires,

Reflecting the human factor of this

Truly profound earthly number

Of the worldly accomplishments.

Since people haste to enjoy the taste of life,

Excessively drawing upon their vital resources,

Only those of us who stint themselves strictly

Can make their lives be meaningful and indicative.

While all men alike strive for starting out in life,

I only observe their inevitable return to their home.

Though outside there may be a beautiful life to enjoy,

I stay at ease inside my simply decorated curtains.

I rule to accumulate my virtues, not to dissipate them;

I abide by the substance rather than the hull,

And deal with the fruits rather than the flowers,

Dismissing what is without and sticking to what is within.

Though making too much of life speaks of a ‘good luck,’

And fortitude in getting what is hard to get

Tells of one’s might, yet to be overgrown in might

Means to decay then untimely in life.

That's why I let my mouth be shut to block the passage

Of all six desires to be exempt from exhaustion

For the rest of life. But if I open my mouth

To promote myself, I'll not find salvation to my last breath.

For this simple reason I have nothing special in mind,

And thus men around me evolve themselves;

Recently, I love to be at rest, running the natural course,

And people around me behave well themselves.

I do not engage myself in any businesses or trades,

And people enrich themselves;

I have no preferences and desires, and people around me

Run their simple and honest lives, as I see fit.

" Dismissing what is without and sticking to what is within" is the line
that speaks loudly to me...

I find stanza four especially insightful; and stanza six certainly the way to go. John
