It was a crisp November Day

And the little girl was visiting

 her Grandparents Farm.

After she hugged her Grandma

She would run out to the barn

To visit her animal friends.

There was Momma Kitty

And her babies,

The old Bull down in the corner.

She was a bit afraid of him

With his ring in his nose

And his loud bellowing,

But she loved the cows

And the calves.

She would grab a handful

Of hay and hold it out

And let them eat from

Her hand

And it tickled.

Her next stop was the stall

Where Tom Turkey lived.

But on this day

he wasn’t there.

She ran back to the farmhouse

And ran to Grandmother…

“Tom is gone, Tom is gone!”

“It’s ok little one, he is here

in the house resting.

He is coming to see you later.

When she was called to Dinner,

She ran to the Dining room

The table was set very fancy.

She climbed up onto her chair

As the rest of the family gathered

Around the table, too.

Suddenly here Aunt came in

With a huge platter

“Tom Turkey is here”

Happy Thanksgiving!

A good poem, Susan, but like some others, I feel for the little girl. I could not eat any of my pet rooster, but my husband had no problem partaking of the meat of his pet goat. It might have been because he was a tough little kid, descended from tough "farm stock", and I was a small-town kid and a girl to boot.
I do enjoy your poetry when I get time to read it.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Nicely penned Susan, but I'm afraid, were I the little girl, I'd have had as much trouble eating Tom as I would have had eating my pet dog. I grew up on a small farm where we got to know the pigs and the beef cattle that wound up on our table. It's tough to eat something that you have hand fed. Dick

This I know well, Susan, too well. Growing up on a farm, it was hard to eat the chicken or the lamb you once knew and had given a name to.
