I recently read an interview with historian, artist, social commentator and gadfly Hakim Bey. One tertm he used, "Prosthetic Memory," inspired this poem.

PROSTHETIC MEMORY

Inspired by a quote from Hakim Bey

Prosthetic memory;

Ersartz recollection.

And there it is-

Collective subconscious

From the dawn of creation…

Really????

Has the machine

Replaced the man?

The hard drive

Superseded the brain?

What memories are there???

Mine?? Certainly NOT mine!!!

Nothing there to recall.

Lost in cyberspace

Light years away…

Danger, Will Robinson!!!

Clickety click:

The mouse moves,

And a million neurons

Implode.

No thanks

I’ll take my memories

Off the web.

Memory and information:

Two different things-

I’ll keep mine separate

Thank you..

Love the self-effacement in
"Nothing there to recall"
but love more the entire perspective
of the poem and how, Chip, you see
and how you respond
This is very worthwhile.

Just as surely as our math skills deteriorated with the introduction of the cash register and calculators; and our reading skills declined after the advent of the TV and talkies; your poem would have us believe so shall our memories suffer from the preponderance of "PROSTHETIC MEMORY" found in today's world. I guess I'm on board with that. Dick

It is frightening to pause and take our fingers off the keyboard and our eyes off the screen and just ponder how far and fast technology has taken us and wonder where it will go next.
