Say a prayer for these two.

Disabled?

One is black, the other white.
One’s a Christian; one’s a Jew.
One young, one old, they’re quite a sight,
Caregivers wonder what to do.

This couple met and that was that,
Their depth of love we’ll never know,
In countless meetings I have sat
Distracted by the way they glow.

The higher functioning of us
See problems the disabled miss,
These endless problems we discuss
While all they do is love and kiss.

It’s true that children would be wrong,
And there are points that must be made,
But fearing they won’t get along?
The able are the ones afraid.

Professionals create the fears,
The fears that lovers never learn,
With innocence that so endears
I hope we let them have their turn.

And who are we that must decide
What’s best for other people’s hearts?
Can we let go and look inside
At all the wonder love imparts?

Or have the failures we must own
Disabled our own chance to see?
Are we so better off alone
Or do they teach what’s meant to be?

We work for “The Division,” yes…
But if we read our client’s joys-
The able make their world a mess,
Division is what love destroys.
