Drawn out from safe seclusion by a distant blazing sun
Whose stellar call engulfs their sphere in light,
The phototropic moths appear as millions one by one
Ascend to test their limits in a flight.
These creatures live within a world of instinct, not desire.
Their goal requires what nature did not give.
The means to reach the sun would lead them blindly in to fire,
It’s only when they fail those moths can live.
But man creates a different world where smaller suns may burn,
The moths can reach these stars and so be caught
In dances to the death where they are singed before they learn
What can be had is not what should be sought.
Can human beings learn to read the meaning in the lines
Which nature freely writes with all her grace?
Seek not the light, but turn in the direction where it shines
To see what gifts are waiting in that place.
