Friendly Fire

Am I friendly fire, only hurting who I love?
Just because I’m honest that it’s you I’m dreaming of.
Don’t I just distract you from the life that you should find?
Every time I tell you that you’re always on my mind.

I can’t find an answer for the things that I should do,
Confessing all this love I’m feeling- just because it’s true .
Just because I know that it is all that you deserve.
Does it mean I’m innocent? What purpose does it serve?

I have made some promises you know that I must keep,
But how can I deny when I have found a love this deep?
You are the very essence of the greatest love I’ve known,
But I can’t give myself to you because I’m not my own.

Perhaps it is the poet’s lot, this kind of love we know.
We do not get to hold it, but we cannot let it go.
And so we walk an endless dream believing what we feel,
And wishing with our broken hearts that we could make it real.

I’ll ask you to forgive me for confessing my desire,
If being so in love with you is only friendly fire,
But you know just as well as I there isn’t any doubt,
This is a fire neither one of us is putting out.
