Old Fashioned

I love when sculpture captures nature’s best
As if an artist working hand in hand
With God, a work of magic- clay caressed
Forms beauty that we all can understand.

But then there is this stuff called, “Abstract art.”
Materials and shapes unrecognized.
When I see these it damages my heart,
As if what’s real has now become despised.

I don’t know what it is that I should see…
An alien? Or some big piece that fell
Out of their UFO to land near me?
What ever these things are, I just can’t tell.

I do not find that ignorance is bliss,
Or like to look at things that I can’t name,
And keep on thinking, “What the heck is this?”
But no one else admits they feel the same.

So I’m the only one who’s out of touch-
And poetry affects me this same way,
When poetry can tell the world so much.
I read the words but don’t know what they say.

Oh nice big words get scattered on the page,
And praised as if all people think it’s fine.
But I would need confer with some grand sage
For any meaning or perhaps design.

I guess I’m just a relic from the past
Who still adheres to metered words that rhyme.
But maybe what I write for you will last,
If love and truth can stand the test of time.

..Well said John!!..I get frustrated when I read a poem that looks snazzy and rather brilliant but in reality it's just a "big worded" mumbo jumbo..I respect myself too much to bother giving reviews re such work..so ..call me ignorant:).... I still say big words don't make a good poem..a big heart does!!!
ty John for a brillant write..

Wonderful John, I love poetry that comes from the heart, poetry I can feel, like this one, beautiful and excellently expressed, as for abstract art..I totally agree!

John,

I commisserate with you.(lol) Sorry, sorry, sorry... just couldn't resist! You write as your muse directs and, clearly, your heart directs your muse. Your work always ROCKS, and that works for me!

Hugs,
Tami

I feel the same, John.
Readers can tell when a poem comes from the heart,
or just thrown together on a page. I don't use
fancy words or phrases...but I hope my meaning
comes through .

Me too John, I very much enjoy abstract art but words need to be understood for what they truly mean.

The world needs old relics like you, just as much as it needs the abstract and the serreal. It's what makes the world beautiful.

John: I'm with you here. I don't know a lot of big words nor have I done a lot of reading since college, so there's a lot of things I don't know a thing about. And as far as abstract art is concerned, sometimes it's pretty to look at, but I sit there wondering what the artist really had to do to create it--did he/she just slap a bunch of paint on the canvas or did he/she mean for it to look like that--and what is it supposed to look like anyway? I guess I'm old-fashioned too.
