We think of darkness as darkness,
We seldom think of darkness as light.
At every hour of the universal day,
Darkness invades earth with a blanket of night.
The stars twinkle from afar seeming very small,
The light they give off amounts to little at all.
The moon rises and sets according to its seasons,
Giving off borrowed light for its own selfish reasons.
Let us stop complaining and give up the fight,
Without the darkness, there would be no night.
II
What if darkness could be called a substitute to light,
A darkness so dark it seems to glow as something bright.
The darkness holds the universe under its sway,
It swallows up light and seemingly keeps it at bay.
Oceans could dry up and mountains could level away,
The winds could die down to nothing, not even a stir.
The clouds could pass overhead without making a whirr.
Even the light of the moon, earth’s mistress, could fade,
Who could imagine such a fathomless mystery to behold,
That without the darkness, there would be no light.
III
What if darkness held a promise to become akin to light
Imagine for a moment darkness equal to the darkest night
That resides within each of us as the dark night of the soul
A darkness so rich it breaks us down before making us whole
A darkness that teaches us the meaning of what we have undone
A darkness that awakens the mind to an illumination unsung
Can blessing emerge as light from the darkest despair
A luminous presence illuminating the night with an intimate flare
Then eternal darkness will return to the realm of space most deep,
Where it can wait for the moment its universal promise to keep.
