In a Far Country
By John Herlihy

We speak of God as if we know Him.
How on this earth can we know Him,
When we know not even who we are,
Much less Him, He is near as we are far.

He is at home, we are in a far country;
His is the universe; we only stand sentry.
Wherever you may turn, there is His Face;
Our face only embodies the human race.

He gives birth, but is never ever born;
He doth cause death, but He never dies.
He is one, a unity, totally without form;
He reaches out to us and always replies.

We are given birth and in this way born;
We will meet death and in some way die.
We are the many, divided, cast into form;
We search for truth until we end up torn.

He is the Spirit, the Infinite, the Eternal;
We are the soul, both finite and temporal.
We breathe in His spirit when we are born;
We breathe out our soul into an angel’s horn.

When He breathes, He always sings sweetly;
As the Heavens unravel, silence imitates sound.
Suns replenish galaxies within the firmament;
Moons roam like orphans thru night’s parchment.

We gaze into the heavens in perpetual wonder;
We fear and tremble in lightning and thunder.
We gaze at the open flower petal and think why;
We see the end coming and know we must die.

God created the human soul in order to be known;
The human soul surrenders; an action it truly owns.
Spirit descends as a supreme act of divine beatitude;
Our souls ascend as a supreme act of human gratitude.

a truthful piece of poetry about untruthful reality created and maintained by means of such a tiny things like neurons, protons and atoms. Enjoyed its rhythm and eight-verse size. Cheers, alex

He must be the Internet… For when I ask the Internet a question, the Internet always answers and most of the time, the Internet is right. If I pray, I get no answer and, generally things continue as they are. But, if something happens that seems to relate to what I prayed, I began to claim it as a miracle and that my prayer was answered by Him (Whoever He is?). The Internet is real. He is just a figment of imagination.

But you write of Him well, as though you know Him personally. I'll place my trust in the Internet. After all, a 90% right response rate is far better than a 0% response rate with a lottery chance that something good will come from it.

The idea that we were created in God's image is a stunning revelation. Much on this planet tries to corrupt that image. A God whom we could understand exhaustively, and whose revelation of Himself confronted us with no mysteries, or perplexities, whatsoever, would be a God in man's image and therefore an imaginary God, not the Most High God of the Bible at all. Your curiosity, John, will eventually lead you to the Truth. Enjoyed your thoughts. Peace to you... r

Like Jerry said, I enjoyed your poem, even if I don't believe.
