Tick-Tock
By John Herlihy

At first nothing but silence,
Nothing but hush all around.
The night in full compliance,
The breath held no sound.

The clock was then ticking,
With its steady rhythmic beat.
The cat its furry paws licking,
Outside air held night’s heat.

The tick made my ears itch,
As if hearing the voice of a witch.
Then my nose began to twitch,
I lay in bed feeling bewitched.

Its ticking prickled my soft skin,
I could listen to the drop of a pin.
Time passing seemed like next of kin,
Nothing to lose, but with nothing to win.

Then, I thought to myself: Just stop,
That insistent, incessant tick tock.
Bearing down in the passage of my ears,
Beating notes with the passing of years.

Air now heavy with sadness found,
Fleeting time had now slowed down.
Every second in stretch and strain,
Each beat a moment of drumming pain.

The seconds groaned in mournful voice,
This clearly was not the time to rejoice.
All my feelings seemed large and hurt,
The day’s sorrow now on heightened alert.

The tick tock seemed to climb up a tree,
As if wanting to look about, everything to see.
The beats, like my heart, they were a-galloping,
The spirits of the night seemed all-enveloping.

The clock kept ticking as if here to stay,
I never knew the moment I slipped away.
Only sounding pulse beating in the night,
I hear nothing, until I see the day’s light.

EVERYONE HEARS THE CLOCK...BUT THE CLOCK. THIS OFTEN HAPPENS WHEN THE MESSAGE IS THE SAME ONE AND NEVER CHANGES. 'REPETITION' FOR LISTENERS AND SPEAKERS CAN BECOME BORING. THIS LEADS ME TO THINK HOW MIRACULOUS GOD IS IN THAT HE INSPIRES HIS CALLED 'MINISTERS' TO TELL THE AGE-OLD STORY(FROM GENESIS TO REVELATION)OVER AND OVER BUT IN SO MANY NEW AND DIFFERENT WAYS AND CONCEPTS THAT ONE NEVER BECOMES LIKE THE CLOCK TO ITS TICK TOCK...AND GROWS DEAF FROM BOREDOM. WELL DONE AND ENJOYED. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

The sounds of tick tocking and trains lull me to sleep. Imagine yourself in a box car going to who knows where! I find them calming but that's me. LOL!!

Love ya!

Man, does this bring back memories. At one time had this loud ticking clock hanging over the mantle we had already had for a few years and at this particular moment, I was trying to enjoy some silence and time to myself but that ticking and then loud alarm tones on every half hour and hour were even worse than the sound of an ambulance going by. My mother-in-law happened to have just stopped by when it sounded on the hour, about noon, so 12 dang loud tones and I said, " I am throwing that damn clock in the trash, I hate that thing, momentarily forgetting it was a wedding present from my mother in law who was right there. Had to eat crow on that one. Maybe that's why my wife divorced me, it was the damn clocks fault!

A truly original portrait of time and the instrument hooked up to our own sense of what's past and what's coming. Well done.

I can recall those damn ticking clocks. Back when I could hear well in my youth they could keep me awake like that until I dozed off and then wake me up in the morning with that incessant ticking. Fortunately, I now have electronic clocks that I can stare at when I can't get to sleep.

I used to collect antique clocks. I love the chimes. Now I have a few quiet clocks and hardly notice the time. Thank you Jesus😄👍🏻My life is blessed when it used to be one big mess. Thank you John for this reflective poetic timeless piece. Peace be with you 🤠John Michael

Ahhh . . . Inasmuch as you fought the ticking of that blasted clock, it held on and put you in tomorrow land.
