Poem Artwork

Life is like a coin.

You can spend it

Any way you wish.

But you can only spend it,

Once.

                         Lillian Dickson

We were returning home

From another marvelous vacation

On a lovely deserted back road

Through the gorgeous green wilderness

The scenery was majestic

The air was clean and fresh

We were alone - together

In Paradise

As we approached the bridge

It happened

It happened in the blink of an eye

And there was no time to react

The earth began shaking violently

Monstrous echoing rumbles pierced the canyon

Boulders began plunging off the cliffs

And the bridge began collapsing

Directly beneath our feet

Suddenly

We were careening

Through the air

To certain death

Suddenly

Our Paradise

Had quickly become

Our Hell

I clutched my wife’s hand

Whispered I love you

Closed my eyes

And prepared to die

Then I woke up

My worst nightmare

A premonition of my death

A glimpse of the Apocalypse

Or simply just a dream

I really don’t know

But I do know that now

Whenever I get in my truck

I picture that scene in my mind

And that collapsing bridge

I have always taken the back roads

On my numerous wanderings

Hither and Yon

And I always will

The scenery is gorgeous

There’s hardly any traffic

And it’s extremely peaceful

But I also often encounter

People places and things

That I have seen in my dreams

In real life

I have done so many times

And I’ve always considered it

To be a gift

I once encountered a strange traveler

In the deep dark woods

That I had met three days prior

In a dream

I once stumbled upon a rare gold coin

On a sandy beach in the Caribbean

That I had discovered

In one of my dreams

Several weeks before leaving on our trip

I once came home late at night

To find my deceased grandmother

Silently standing in my living room

Several nights after I had dreamt

That I was still a child

Happily playing in her flower garden

She never said a word

I wish she had

She just smiled at me

Then quickly vanished

But now I have to wonder

If this gift has become a curse

I wonder

And I have no answers

But I wonder still

Should I get a different truck

Should I not cross that bridge

If and when I do encounter it

Or should I simply accept fate

As I drive off

On yet another new day

In my truck

I wonder still

And it frightens me a little

But I also know

That I will continue

To journey down

These roads less traveled

Because they are somehow

Mysteriously etched

Deep within my heart and soul

Wow! I'm stunned, Eddie K... I have things happen to me too, that can't be explained. Have you read The Celestine Prophecy? This poem of yours completely mesmerized me... Adam will understand why. Life is an adventure, as I've taught my son, and as long as you are alive, go for it! I so love when you reach down and share yourself, as you are so good at doing and writing. Great stuff! katy xox.

Ed...sometimes our dreams are not always telling us to be afraid of some accident that could happen...sometimes they are trtying to tell us about changes we need in our life style...unless this dream is recurring it may not mean what you fear...it could also be about someone close to you, although I will say one thing this poem explains your dream so well...excellent job...Fletcher B

Aha! here is the poem you mentioned on my Rhyader Falls...how uncanny to write in such similar veins so close to one another... but I think that we "touchy, feely, spiritual"-types DO share in an amazing collective consciousness and tap into the "great unknown that is OUT there". As for specifics of dreams/deja vu-type experiences, I think that underlying causes of these can be many: the brain re-sorting and filing unprocessed thoughts; pseudo-sexual parallels; as well as the spiritual incidents that can come from sources either good or evil, I believe. Some people are just more in tune with the ether than others, I guess! If the source of your premonition was evil, then you can pray protection against it and the onslaught of fear that it engenders. If it was a "good warning", then, having been forearmed as it were, if the situation should really be about to present itself, then I'm sure you will again get that quickening sense in your spirit and will know to take evasive action! We can't live in fear, Ed, as you rightly suggest... otherwise we wouldn't stir out of bed! We are all spiritual beings and it is comforting to know that sometimes, we are not the only "fruitcake" around and that many others share these surreal encounters. Bless you, take care! Kate xx

This is one gift that few recieve and basically wish they did not have it. Many wish for it without realizing what comes with it. Sometimes it saves a life with warnings..........

Oh Dear, Ed! No wonder I felt my spirit react to
your poetry! I have that same gift/curse;-) It is
really a gift. However, I feel the drawbacks you do,
on the other hand I think it would be boring without it.;-)
This is a fantastic poem, you have done it with perfection!

From Kindergarten, I believe, I was always a diehard fan of
backroads and their scenics. My camera is so used to the unusual
along these treasured trails...the shutter almost clicks by itself!

Enjoyed this immensely, Eddie!

Ed, you never finished that dream, you may have survived the ending and now, you will never know. Dreams are strange but a lot of the time they are as you say, premonitions. I would say your's is a special dream and watch out for unknown dangers.

Troublesome dreams are always a bother yet, if it enables you to see beyond the moment hold on to it and share it with others as you just have. You’re not alone with these visions Poet. Sometimes I wonder if it is because of the life experiences we have had, although there have been many yet to pass and can clearly see. I enjoyed the read. Thank you for sharing it.

Deja vu Ed? Must be partly? I have had that feeling of being in some
place that I had been to before. I would love to have had also the type experiences you relate. When I drink very heavily in my youth,
I remember working in a place and hearing Little Richard singing "Shake, Rattle, And Roll" over and over again. Of course this is a form of "audio" DT's. I would love to have these experiences now ... deep vivid ones ... you bet I would write a song about them. Sometimes in my emotional entanglements at the AD ... I have felt that a person was thinking about me for a definite reason; because their thoughts were so strong. What a fine topic to write a poem about! You can see how it spurred my comments.
p.s. one thing I do believe. Sometimess I do automtic writing and it may seem quite silly to someone who receives it - but in my mind it is purposeful and true. Bill
pps ... that is one reason I get so emotional wrapped up in someone.
I feel I have known them before and identify with them. I must have scared Kate Burnside to death.

Be happy with that gift Ed, it was given you by a power we only believe in but never have seen...I envy that power, but I also know it is or can be a curse, my wife had that power, I wonder how she used it the last day of her life 9/11...keep your truck and do what you will with bridges, as it is not those that are the answers to dreams, it is your gift...Find Peace, Ed & Rufuz

Dreams are what they are but what ever they are we can only say in hindsight that a particular dream " came true " .

you could take the Interstate but then you would run the risk of getting wasted by a tire flying off of a semi .

Scary dream, if you see that bridge one day, either turn round and find another way, speed up and race across or get out and push. If it starts to shake at least you can run back - unless you are in the middle!!! Jackie <> <

Ed,
Weird ? Yes, but if all dreams came true someone else would be standing in my shoes and what fun would that be ? Life is a chance and to face it without fear is no challenge. Good Luck with your bridge. I'm rooting for ya. Wonderful write. Very interesting.
