Poem Artwork
-->

“If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures

From the shelter of compassion and pity,

You will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.”

St. Francis of Assisi

I’ve been an animal rights activist

Almost my entire earthly life

Being a Christian I consider it my duty

To be their caretaker and not add to their strife

Therefore I like many other compassionate human souls

Have been a proponent of The Animal Fighting Prohibition Act

Which would make it a felony for cruel profit driven human dogfighters

To transport dogs such as the one pictured above sparing them deadly attacks

Although this bill is supported by three quarters of the House of Representatives

And numerous humane societies and law enforcement agencies across this vast land

It has been diligently blocked by proponents of The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act

Which would make people like me ‘terrorists’ and give dogfighters a slap on the hand

Just yesterday The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act was quickly passed by Congress

While The Animal Fighting Prohibition Act still lingers in the House where it will die

And now people like me are considered terrorists and can be sent to prison for 10 years

Well I almost feel like laughing but every time I look at that dog’s picture I want to cry

And now with the passage of The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act

Even pet stores that buy their puppies from vicious puppy mill factories

Can point to people like me who advocate pet adoptions versus purchases

And if their profit margins drop can now have we ‘terrorists’ arrested with glee

So if I or any other animal rights activist members of Authors Den

Should suddenly stop posting and mysteriously vanish into the night

We have probably been arrested by the Department of Homeland Security

While vile lobbyists callous politicians and vicious dogfighters laugh with delight

I was once threatened with arrest

For attempting to help a homeless veteran

Now I could face prison for helping animals

I doubt the insanity of mankind will ever end

The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA) passed yesterday

Despite an outpouring of faxes, emails, and phone calls

From concerned animal advocates like myself.

It passed unanimously in the Senate.

And it passed without any debate on the House floor at all.

It passed in roughly 15 minutes.

Dennis Kuchinich (D
Cleveland) was the lone Representative to speak out against AETA.

Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R Wisconsin) was its champion.

Chairman Sensenbrenner is also responsible for blocking the passage of the Animal Fighting Prohibition Act, although this bill has languished in the House forever, and is supported by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the National Sheriffs' Association, numerous humane societies, and more than 400 state and local law enforcement agencies across America.

In fact, he has blocked every animal protection bill before his
committee this year, including a bill that would stop the killing of exotic
animals via remote control over the Internet.

And now I wonder how long it will be,

Before revealing how Congressmen vote on an issue,

Will be considered a crime, too.

“Ever occur to you why some of us

Can be this much concerned with animal suffering?

Because our government is not.

Why not?

Because animals don't vote or make political contributions.”

Paul Harvey

It is sad to learn that one should go to prison just by helping animals while letting the offenders go away with it. As an animal activist in this war-torn nation of Somalia, I was looking forward to get sympathetic support and understanding from people in the developed nations and hearing this from America is shockingly unbelievable. Oh the pic, I wish I didn't know anything like this happening to dogs or any other animal. As a Moslem I believe that Mercy from God dawns on to those who show mercy to the poor, the weak, the vulnerable including animals. Keep defending the rights of animals Ed. I pray for you to have God's mercy for the sake of loving and defending the rights of animals. You are not alone.

ED, THIS IS GHASTLY - IMMORAL - AND PERVERSE!

Then again, why should we believe they would care for the life of an ANIMAL...when they do not even care for the life of an, as yet, un-born HUMAN??? And for those who perpetrate it, why should they believe THEY are of any value either?...it will come back on them.

There is a STENCH that has risen to the nostrils of The LORD, and there IS judgment against evil.......

May God Almighty supernaturally preserve His soldiers, as we continue to fight the good fight, and stay faithful unto the end...

I admire you greatly, my Friend

What's wrong with this picture is that it is painfully all too brutally real; what's wrong with this picture is that it doesn't name and shame the perpetrators of this outrage. What's wrong with this picture is that somehow it is allowed to get to happen in the first place. To say that such people are animals is to do the animal-kingdom a great disservice. Bless you, K xx

To Micke and Others:

The vast majority of animal activists are against violence of any kind, and we believe violence should be prosecuted. The reason so many were against AETA is that is goes far beyond that:

Very sadly, AETA labels any activity causing an "animal enterprise"
to suffer a profit loss as a terrorist act.

For example, members of the public concerned about the growing number of homeless dogs in their community picket a local pet store selling unaltered puppies.

Under this bill, the pet store owner could claim lost profits due to the picketing. and the picketers could face possible federal prosecution as terrorists.

And I think this is truly truly sad.

Reviewed on November 14, 2006
I may be confused, but doesn't the AETA specifically refer to the fact that the "Animal Enterprise" must be LEGAL, and would not deter from the Animal Fighting Prohibition Act? Although some of those legal enterprises are questionable!!

It is the *extreme* acts of violence (bombings, destruction of property and people), that I read this act to include as terroristic, right? Won't deter me from carring or posting signs, or writing about injustices.

Believe me, Ed...I'm questioning my thoughts/interpretations, not your words. And as we've witnessed for years, amendments can be ammended...

Now, we still have the opportunity of pressing to see The Animal Fighting Prohibition Act passed as law.

Good poem, good reporting...THANKS for this.

Micke

Ed I'm sickened by this kind of sensless legislation, just as much as I cringe when I look at that picture. Even with the Dems new power
in the senate and house, this makes no difference. I believe all politicians of all parties have become useless pawns of their own ambitions. I pray for some good people to run for office, but finances stop all the good ones, you have to be willing to cheat to get the money needed for campaigns. That's where the problem lies in our government. Money!...

I cannot believe that congress or any politician would lend their hands to a bill like AETA, as owners of and lovers of animals all vote and do make occasional political donations...If people like you that support and care for dogs and animals get arrested trying to stop things like the above picture depicts, that would be a travesty of justice & a total reverse of what I believe this country was founded on...ED & RUFUZ
