“Winter is nature's way of saying,

‘Up Yours.’”

Robert Byrne

I awoke very early to an arctic blast

Even my dogs would not go outside

The new year had brought us a visitor

And from him, we just could not hide

That rascal Old Man Winter

Had come roaring into town

How quickly I had forgotten

That he hadn’t been around

He pulled up in his ice mobile

He parked right outside my door

Soon, he huffed and he puffed

And he rushed in along my floor

I was kind of shocked at first

About all I could do was stare

And suddenly – just like magic

Old Man Winter was everywhere

He now raced along beside me

He breathed ice upon my dome

He chilled me to the very bone

And soon, he felt right at home

“Ho, Ho, Ho,

I’m back, my startled little friend!

I’m here to freeze your fragile bones,

To the bitter, bone chilling, frigid end!”

“But Old Man Winter,

What have I done,

For you to act so badly,

To a lowly mortal son?”

“Why nothing - nothing at all,

My very skittish, human friend,

I’m sent here each and every year,

Just to test your mettle once again!

“I assure you that it’s nothing personal,

Don’t you extremely silly humans see?”

Now, Old Man Winter grinned at me

As he laughed again, so hysterically

After several very chilling minutes

I now found myself laughing, too

So I pulled out my jug of bourbon

And I poured a few shots, for two

“Here’s to you, Old Man Winter,

May you enjoy your lengthy stay.”

But silently, in my now frozen heart,

To the Maiden of Spring, I did pray.

Oh I sure like the last line, did you cross fingers behind you back,he is very temperamental you know, if he feels chited, he blows back just in time to kill the tomatoes. Keep your toes warm, and have another Bourbon, nice one! Jasmin Horst

Awww, cute write but brrrrrr much too cold. That old thermometer needs to climb upward a bit before all living things freeze to death. Like that old trusty bourbon though....

Be safe,
Karen

I really do think Old Man Winter came to vacation here in Florida. Here, in Brandon it's going down to 24 degrees. I love it but the people who moved here to get a way from freezing temperatures are asking other's where is the tropical winters. My ducks were all alive and voicing their opinion today. I'm not sure if they liked the colder temps or were making travel plans for Puerto Rico or for Cuba. Love and bl-bl-bl-ess-ings!

Ed, you are just to talented...this is full of good humor and brings a giggle to the throat and puts a smile on the face. It is blizzard cold here to and I sure hope the Ice Man (Old Man Winter) doesn't knock at my door and bid me to go for a ride in his ice mobile...I don't think I could take it. Loved this!

Yea it sure feels sometimes that the winter holds a personal grudge against us...just when I am the most tired always seems to be when the shoveling needs to be done the most.

Ed,

Don't worry--by this weekend, y'all are supposed to be in the 50s. We're at 16 degrees above right now here in Burleson, Tx., supposed to be in the low 40s for highs. By Friday, we're forecast to be in the 70s, and by Monday, we could be having severe storms. Weather: gotta love it. NOT! LOL

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Stay warm, here? Great write.
