The Humane Society of Louisiana

Lost their animal shelter in the hurricane

It was located near New Orleans’ Superdome

It took in abused animals, and eased their pain

In addition, thousands of pets on the Gulf Coast

Perished in the ravages of Katrina’s monstrous fury

Now, a Pet Memorial Statue has been commissioned

To be unveiled on Hurricane Katrina’s Third Anniversary

I have been invited to speak at this new statue’s unveiling

And to read a few of the poems from my Katrina Rescue book

It will be both an honor and extremely sad to travel there again

To remember all the pets we lost, and at the city take another look

The images of all the animals we lost are still with me

As are the many wonderful pets we were able to save

I truly hope we as a nation have learned a valuable lesson

And that we never experience another Katrina, I now pray

Renowned sculptor Ric Chashoudian is designing this statue

He just finished a bronze statue of the President’s Dog, Barney

Which is permanently on display at the Presidential Dog Museum

Which is a place that visitors to Annapolis, Maryland will get to see

If you would like to assist in rebuilding this New Orleans shelter

Or perhaps contribute money for the Katrina Pet Memorial Statue
