Another Extremely Sad Morning,

Murder on my Alma Mater campus;

Seven college students gunned down,

By a former student, on a rampage.

This Particular Poem,

Was Inspired By a Recent Historical Film,

September Dawn

It was late in the summer, in the Year of our Lord 1857

When a group of Christians from Missouri and Arkansas

Decided to form a huge wagon train, and eagerly head west

Their dream of living in California, filled all of them with awe

Very unfortunately, for this group of very intrepid travelers

Their great odyssey soon took them through The Utah Territory

These Christians settlers never made it past Mountain Meadows

Theirs is a seldom heard and most horrific American history story

It seems that another group of Christians was already living in Utah

And they soon feared that these newcomers might have a devious plan

So they soon decided that God truly only favored their type of religion

They decided that only Mormons could even be in The Promised Land

In the year of 1857, on the morning of September 11^th, very eerily enough

They told these newcomers that they would now lead all of them to safety

As they marched their fellow Christians into Utah’s Mountain Meadows

They began gunning down each and every one of them, very methodically

By the time the horrific screams and gun smoke had cleared the air

One hundred twenty Christian men, women, and children lay dead

Only one man was brought to justice for this very horrific massacre

Several years later, by an Army firing squad, he was shot in the head

And as I look about our very troubled old world today

I again realize we human beings never learn from history

Hatred and bigotry are still preached in houses of worship

Murder all across the globe, and here, from sea to shining sea

And every time I learn about yet another atrocity by mankind

I wonder if God ever envisioned His children would be so cruel

And I wonder what God in His Heaven must think of we humans

Still so violent and hate-prone, even in religious doctrines and schools
