“There is no quiet place in the white man's cities.

No place to hear the unfurling of leaves in spring,

Or the rustle of the insect's wings.

The clatter only seems to insult the ears.

And what is there to life,

If a man cannot hear the cry of the whippoorwill,

Or the arguments of the frogs around the pond at night?”

Chief Seattle

Although I was born in the big city

I have always been a country boy

Our big cities today, annoy me

I need nature’s solitude and joy

I need to smell the pine trees

I need to hear the whippoorwill

I need God’s very natural Creation

Which always gives me such a thrill

I need to gaze upon a lake

And hear the yodel of a loon

I need to wander the deep forest

And listen to a tiny songbird’s tune

I need to watch a butterfly flutter

I need to gaze upon Earth’s sunset

I need whatever of Nature I can find

Nothing in it, has disappointed me yet

I need to hike those mountain trails

And gaze upon all those critters there

I need to smell those wild wildflowers

Which in Spring, spring up everywhere

I need to hear frogs chatter

As I gaze upon my campfire

Living among Nature’s glory

Has been my lifelong desire

You can have your many cities today

Filled with traffic jams, smog, and crime

Give me a glorious night in the pine forest

As the whippoorwill sings for me, so sublime

A Most Captivating Fact,

About The Glorious Nocturnal Whippoorwill:

The female will lay her eggs in phase with the lunar cycle,

So her eggs hatch on average 10 days before a full moon.

When the moon is nearly full,

Both parents can forage the entire night,

And best provide their children with food.

Listening To An Old Whippoorwill’s Song,

Always Puts Me in a Very Good Mood.

I liked the poem . There are whipoorwills here . I love their plaintive bird songs. I think they are the ony bird that says their name. Am I right?.......M

You and Chief Seattle defined me too here, and Tom Hyland got some of my musical taste correct as well. I'm on book signing tour today, just off the interstate in St. Joseph, Mo. Thank God there's an adjacent residential area with at least some spring bird song going. Even starlings are welcome in this mayhem...Jerry

"When the Whippoorwill calls, and evening is nigh,
I hurry to - My Blue Heaven.
A turn to the right, by a little white light,
will lead you to - My Blue Heaven.
Just Sally and me, and Baby makes three,
we're Happy in - My Blue Heaven..."

Antoine FATS Domino used to croon this tune,
and I loved it, along with most of his hits.

Whippoorwills - Daffodils - Nightshades - Mother Nature's Parades -
IT'S ALL GOOD !!!

THE PITTER-PATTER OF CRITTERS CHATTER IS WHAT REALLY MATTERS!

ED ... KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON --- tom...

The many sounds and angelic songs of the Whippoorwill is one that once heard will stay with you forever. Agreed the forests and woodlands, mountain retreats and long walks in solitude are a far better way to spend time....

Be always safe,
Karen

Lovely and educational as most of your nature poems have a tendency to be. You like myself enjoy and love the outdoors and the country.

Used to see, or rather HEAR, the whip-poor-will in Missouri, but not here in Texas, sadly. What a lovely song they do sing, Ed.
Another beautiful nature poem...with a "fact" I didn't know. THANKS for another lesson.
Love, Micke

Yes, indeed, we should all go out and listen to life. So many miss out on the pleasures of the senses and live for artificial stimulants... Watch nature for a couple of hours a day, and you'll see how to live...

This is beautiful and something one could read again and again without getting tired of it. It sounds a little like some of Merle Haggard's song lyrics. Beautiful write, Ed.
