Flipping Through My Photo Albums,
Thinking About A Trip to the Yucatan;
Soon Had Me Pondering Earthly Life,
And The Possible Destiny of Man
“The road is long,
Before the task is completed.”
Jean Baptiste Mouliere
By some scholarly interpretations
Today’s date, back in the year 3114 B.C.
Was the first day of the Mayan Calendar
What a date that must have been, in history
These ancient Mayans built enormous cities
They traded their goods throughout the world
They developed sophisticated farming techniques
And through astronomy, the heavens were unfurled
They built enormous pyramids and temples to their gods
In the deep rain forests and jungles of Mexico and Yucatan
They developed sophisticated systems of writing and irrigation
Their fine artwork rivals that of ancient Greek and Egyptian man
But after developing their ancient culture for many centuries
Their many cities and temples were abandoned by 1250 AD
To this day, no one really knows why this collapse took place
And for all of us today, it will probably now remain a mystery
But their Creation accounts are still most thought provoking today
They believed mankind existed five times and each was destroyed
Their Long Count Calendar began some 3,000 years before Christ
Some say they knew when our next destruction would be deployed
Their very ancient Long Count Calendar ends on December 21, 2012
When a celestial event will occur some believe will again destroy man
With the way things are going in this very sad old world of ours today
I’m starting to wonder if this latest destruction may now truly be at hand
And if this is at all possibly true ,
Will there be yet another beginning for Earth?
The Mayans left many things behind for all of us,
What will we leave behind, that may be of some worth?

I've heard of this supposed demise on December 21, 2012. One has to wonder if that can be true. This is a lovely, well thought out piece of history bought to life.
