“Antisthenes says that in a certain faraway land,

The cold is so intense that words freeze as soon as they are uttered,

And after some time, they then thaw, and they become audible,

So that words spoken in winter go unheard until the next summer.”

Plutarch

Music: Magical Travels

In the depths of winter

My wife likes to hibernate

But I like to wander up north

Where the frosty ice caves await

Here is a most magical winter world

That is quite different than in summer

Here, even a most wondrous waterfall

In the frosty realm of winter, slumbers

Here, I can actually walk upon these waters

Here, I can hear each crunch of snow below

Here, I can shout across this vast frozen lake

And then await the sound of my frozen echo

And here, every once in awhile, if I’m fortunate

I can hear a lone wolf or a coyote, return my call

As I stand here on this frozen lake, by this icy cave

The truly wondrous beauty of this place, does enthrall

And then, as I wander into this magnificent ice cave

I imagine all the words now captured here in its walls

So, I soon make a vow to return when summer arrives

To determine if wise old Antisthenes was right, after all

In the depths of winter,

My wife likes to hibernate;

But I like to wander up north,

Where the frosty ice caves await.

Terrific poem with such an unusual but wise quote from a philosopher. In Vermont I once walked across a frozen lake that for years I had longed to paddle but it was always too remote. Winter presents possibilities that summer prevents...
68 degrees here at 11pm last evening and you should of seen the size of the black bear that ambled across my front lawn! (I was on the porch doing my yoga exercises - he was huge!) Thought you'd like that comment...

PEEWEE - Well, Pardner - you can keep all that COLD and enjoy it -

I prefer Spring and Fall - you can have the other two extremes!

Somehow the WORDS seem to FLOW better also! TK>

Because people around here was complaining that the winter was too warm, Father Winter got pissed and we got -34 F for our troubles!
Not even the wolf dared to go out and howl at the enormous moon just rolling along the horizon, even she didn't want to go up in that cold.

Brrr. This one made me cold! LOL And I LOVE cold weather! I'd much rather be cold than hot; a woman can always put more clothes on when she's cold; if hot, she can only take off so much before she's arrested for indecent (northern and southern) exposure, whereas a man can get away with wearing shorts or sandals (and some men you'd rather NOT see uncovered; you're like: "Cover that UP, PLEASE!!" LOL). Karla and I go around and around about this; I want cold, and she wants it comforable (warm). It doesn't make sense to have 80 degrees in winter!! Give me cold. Snow!! NOT beachfront weather!!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :D

GREAT write, Ed; well done!

Brrr. My blood's thinned out too much, winter harder on my old body now. 30 degrees right now, and I'm freezing (along with the rain, outside!). Wouldn't think I was from Ohio originally, would you? Sounds delightful, for those who can handle the cold temperatures: I can't!! (But then again, hot weather makes me melt. Methinks I'm in trouble. LOL) Well done, explore a cave for me!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
