“Be as a bird,

Perched on a frail branch

That she feels bending beneath her,

Still she sings away all the same,

Knowing she has wings.”

Victor Hugo

In summer, they are very territorial

They don’t like to share their space

But in the depths of the frozen winter

They’ll invite their friends to your place

And they will sing you, the sweetest songs

All they ask in return, is some succulent food

Even in the midst of the most chilling weather

Their joyous songs can brighten anyone’s mood

Their favorite foods are cracked corn and apples

They also relish both sunflower and safflower seeds

I know of no other winter songs, as sweet as theirs

And unlike us, just a little kindness satisfies their needs

And unlike many other birds, they do not migrate

They remain in their chosen home, all the year long

If the long, bitter winter is now giving you the blues

Put out some cardinal food, and listen to their songs

“My profession is to always be alert,

To find God in nature,

To know God’s lurking places,

To attend to all the oratorios

And all the operas that He provides.”

Henry David Thoreau

No cardinals here today, just a bunch of crows which seem to drive the other birds away. It was 42 here this morning ! BURR.. Thats cold for SW Fla....We might get a frost tonight. We've got to cover our veggies in te garden and out side plants.Enjoyed the pom. I Love to hear the birds sing when they come around! We have 2 bird feeders......M

I love that Thoreau Quote - Yes, just above freezing at dawn this morning as I go out to check my water pump and the Cardinal is singing in my tree waiting for me to put the sunflower & safflower seed in. Why because Mr. Big Bear was around last night and knocked the tray feeder over (bent actually) so I put it right, but it's at quite an angle now!
You're so right about Cardinals - (very territorial) Good poem - good info... Later, Mike

Your kinship with nature shines once again via your verses here, Mr. Ed. Thank you. Love and peace,

I'm just about heading out to feed my little friends, it's going to be a darn cold event, though our hearts will be warm. Jasmin Horst

a beautiful write Ed
Several years ago at my son's in the snow white winters
The robins in the are gather by the dozens and shared the drying fruits of a cherry tree, this year, they are not here but replaced
by an awesome vision, a family of wild turkeys 13 in all
feed around the same cherry tree and several of the claimb
the fragile branches as they feed, cherries fall to the ground
sharing with their family members........ they come around almost every day
peace be with you

(I love that Victor Hugo quote--and also Thoreau's). I cherish my little songbirds. They reside outside my window where I write and they sing the sweetest songs to me every day, all year-long. Every time I hear them, I stop and smile and listen ... to hope. Beautiful and truthful piece. Lovely. Hugs, Elizabeth
