For All The Romantics,
Like My Brother Edvard,
Mr. Fee, and D’Artagnan.
Lady Spring had finally arrived in the vast northland
There was a fresh, clean, invigorating scent in the air
Lovely, multi-colored songbirds, were making music
And fragrant blooming flower buds were everywhere
As we headed north on a winding back road
My spouse laughed merrily and was curious
Neither one of us had the foggiest of notions
That by this nightfall, she’d be ghastly furious
Several hours later, I launched my fishing boat
From the harbor boat launch, on Washington Isle
We had taken a marvelous auto ferry to get there
She was delighted, and so loving, were her smiles
As we motored along on Lake Michigan
My new sonar fish locator was doing its job
There below us was a gigantic school of fish
My very trusty anchor very quickly did I lob
Within only a few very short minutes
Both of us had caught a very nice fish
Our mouths were now lustfully watering
Dinner would be: So Romantically De-lish
But that’s when fate cruelly intervened
As I raised the anchor back into my boat
The engine on my fishing vessel, stalled
And we were now very helplessly - afloat
I simply could not re-start the bloody engine
In my spring haste, I had not cleaned the carb
We were now being swept, deeper into the lake
And a massive storm was brewing – it wasn’t far
My wife was getting extremely nervous
As storm clouds began to form, overhead
But our boat was swept onto a small island
“Thank You, Lord!” my spouse quickly said
But very strangely, the sandy beach began moving
There were many large slithering creatures all about
I very quickly checked my trusty navigational maps
We were marooned on Snake Island, without a doubt
Newly arrived spring was definitely snake mating season
They seemed to be gathering here, from all over the lake
And, these northern water snakes, were not very cordial
Especially when their annual mating rituals were at stake
As they began advancing, slithering into our boat
My wife’s terrified screams, quickly began to rise
I assured her that these snakes were not poisonous
But she cared little about that – oh, what a surprise
I quickly jumped into the water, and shoved us away
From this tiny slithering island, of Raw Reptile Love
And, as we began drifting away from it very swiftly
I could hear my wife thanking the Lord God Above
A passing boat motored over, and towed us in
Its skipper even gave me some antiseptic lotion
But the snake bites I had endured, were minor
Compared to my spouse’s venomous emotion
As we sat in our hotel room, later that evening
I could tell that she was still outrageously pissed
It seems that no matter what I so lovingly said to her
She just stared at me with cold snake eyes – and hissed
No spouses or snakes were injured in any way on this particular outing; I very gallantly saved this damsel in distress and sustained the snake bites myself.
But I was truly fascinated by our chance encounter with them on tiny Snake Island – there were dozens of snakes on that sandy beach – and they were all in the mood – for love.
Oddly enough, my wife’s reaction to this lovely spring day – and night - was quite different than theirs, or mine. Perhaps it was the captivating bat family that we met later that same night in our hotel room on tiny Washington Island. But that’s another story.
I think that I understand Earth’s reptiles and bats fairly well,
But women will most likely always remain a mystery to me…
