Their Sweet Old Memory

“Memory is the diary,

That we all carry with us.”

Oscar Wilde

I have often passed this sailboat

As I drive along Lake Michigan

And I had never seen it out sailing

Wondering when it would sail again

But the last time that I drove by it

I spotted an elderly couple on board

So I stopped, and I chatted with them

Wondering if I would learn a little more

“Well, hello there, and how are you?

This is our dear old ‘Sweet Memory,’

Are you by chance here to purchase her?”

This extremely nice old couple shouted to me

“No, I must admit I’m a lazy sailor,

And I prefer a boat with a big motor;

But if you two are really going to sell her,

I’m sure a real sailor would love to own her.”

“To tell you the truth, very kind sir,

We really don’t want to part with her;

But our kids say we’re getting too old,

And none of them are very good sailors.

“We bought our dear old Sweet Memory here,

Way back in the 1970s, over thirty years ago;

We have sailed her up and down Lake Michigan,

And we truly love our dear old Sweet Memory so.”

Their heartfelt words had quickly gotten to me

I could now see the mist, welling up in their eyes

They soon showed me their many old photo albums

Over thirty years worth of sailing her, under blue skies

I eventually thanked them for showing me their photos

And I wished them well, on selling their Sweet Memory

But as I drove off, I now felt extremely bad for this couple

Having to give up any such treasure, is so very sad, not sweet

Very nice story Mr. Ed. I guess there's no way any of us can stop old age from creeping up on us. So touching that you took the time to stop and speak to the couple. Nice job.

What a shame. All those years of memories wrapped up in that boat and now when perhaps they need it most they must part...

Be always safe,

I feel the sadness in this Ed...makes me think how grateful I am that my Mom can make it up to Camp Narrows for the summer...as, she did not think she would...the world becomes a bit smaller at some time in our life...but yes the meomries remain.

Such a moving write...makes one stop and reflect on life and how quickly it passes, we should all take time to stop and smell the roses, sail the waters, climb the mountains...live life to it's fullest. Well done my friend, enjoyed this much!
Blessings from Ky.

If I got by the scale of the main mast to the boat it should be about 30, at most, feet...she'd make someone a "sweet" new memory to cruise your big lake up there...I know how to sail, I learned when I was quite young, but it takes alot of know how to do so safely, but for you Ed, it would make a great liveaboard when the wife gets grumpy & the dogs would love it too...Ed & Rufuz

This was truly sad, it makes me realize we are all getting older and can't do the things we used to enjoy
But looking back I wouldn't change a thing
I do have the memories and hold on to them tightly
Wonderful touching write Ed, I enjoyed it
Have a great day

A sailor will die before giving away his boat, even a very old sailor, because you never can sell one member of your family.
My heart go to them.
