“These lakes and these woods,

Were left to us, by our ancestors;

We will give them away, to no one.”

An Ojibwa Indian Elder

It is now dawn, on one of my favorite old lakes

It’s tucked very deep, in northern pine forest land

Old Tater, my black Labrador fishing partner and I

Head down to the dock, on a misty morning grand

A loud, rippling splash, swiftly breaks dawn’s silence

Tater and I look; it might be a hungry smallmouth bass

We jump into our little fishing boat, and soon take off

Hoping for a day in paradise, that in memory, will last

I slowly head over to one of my favorite old fishing spots

It’s near some limestone rocks, with ancient pictographs

Suddenly, I hear the voices of ancient spirits, in the mist

Their presence here undeniable, and I hope that it will last

Soon, my fishing partner and I catch a few large walleye

And then, we spot a wondrous osprey, above us, on wing

We both now watch, as she skillfully dives into the water

Then flies off to her young in the nest; breakfast she brings

As the sun begins to rise ever higher over old Spirit Lake

Good old Tater and I now get the urge to go for a cold dip

Soon, the two of us are splashing around in these blue waters

Ancient spirits, fish, wildlife, and a swim – it’s truly, a marvelous trip

Beauty! Sigh...want to be there. I haven't had fresh-caught fish in seems like forever. No wonder you're such a mellow guy. You take the time to restore your soul. Thanks for the lovely respite, Ed...

Ed you're making me drool. I'm staring out my office window at the dry brown hills and it's going to be 100. Your trip sounds refreshing on a lot of different levels. Patrick

Ah the simple, non-20th-Century-Crazy-Hectic, lifestyle. What I wouldn't give to live in the ancient times. I never have time for fishing anymore, but this brings back memories :)
