“In my garden there is a large place for sentiment.

My garden of flowers is also my garden of thoughts and dreams.

The thoughts grow as freely as the flowers,

And the dreams are as beautiful.”

Abram L. Urban

The old wooden flower barrel

Is about one hundred years old

Grandpa made it for Grandma

All those many, many years ago

And how I so fondly remember

Seeing it at grandma’s, as a boy

She would plant many flowers in it

It always brought her so much joy

My father decided to maintain it

And, he would paint it once a year

Now, my mother loved planting in it

And, it brought both my parents cheer

The old wooden garden bench

Has to be at least fifty years old

My father bought it for my mother

How they both loved sitting on it so

Both the old barrel and the old bench

Now, have sentimental value for me

And now, I paint and I care for them

And they both fill my heart with glee

I recently bought the two garden statues

They were an anniversary gift for my wife

Now, we sit on the bench, gazing at the barrel

Such simple things bringing joy to numerous lives

I spent much of my life, wandering the world,

Only to discover that the greatest treasures,

Are very often found, in one’s own backyard,

A place today, that brings me much pleasure.

Traditions mixed with contentment in the quiet of the garden-----very good, Ed. I'll seize this opportunity to tell you that the mocking birds around my home have greatly multiplied. They are a bird that I enjoy for the many songs they imitate so well, and they are a tradition from my mother who loved to have them around. Hope you have them there, too. I also have a large carved stone found by my grandfather on his farm in the 1920's that I have discovered most likely was a grain grinding repository shaped by Indians. The dogs like to drink from it...............Jerry

THIRD GENERATION SENTIMENTS ARE QUITE FINE!

P.S. Please tell me that little boy is NOT 'pee-wee-ing in the pool!'

It's true Ed, what you have discovered about 'The Barrel and The Bench'

You have written: I spent much of my life, wandering the world,

Only to discover that the greatest treasures,

Are very often found, in one’s own backyard,

A place today, that brings me much pleasure.

I have found the same thing in my own life...such peace, & contentment & joy.

A lovely poem. Those old mementos from out of the past are sometimes our most treasured objects. Like you have expressed in your poem, those little things left behind by loved ones bring wonderful memories. Have a happy day!

When Jersey Ed came late at night after one of his space trips he used to sleep the night in that bench because he couldn't find the keyhole!
Ma should have told you that!

WOW! This poem is a jewel. So much truth here. So much sentiment. I have an old jewelry box with junk in it. Well, it would be to anyone else. To me it's full of memories of my Mom and Dad. The whole world does hold wonders to see. Most of it is in our own back yards.
God bless,
Lew
