“It’s worse than the Bubonic Plague for plants.”

Cornell University

It has been a summer of horror

All across Earth’s natural world

Even in my very own backyard

I now watch new horrors unfurl

First, our pollinating honeybees began dying

Then frogs, butterflies, bumblebees, and bats

The crickets aren’t singing, the fireflies are few

And less birds are migrating, no doubt about that

Now, we have these reports of deep sea squid

Beaching themselves, along west coast shorelines

Our oceans are warming, and they can’t find food

Their needed source of fish is now, in rapid decline

And now, a Tomato Blight arrived early this spring

And rapidly spread its deadly spores through the air

It has caused once vibrant plants, to shrivel up and die

I sadly found it on numerous tomato plants, everywhere

Just last summer, I had a bumper crop of tomatoes

This summer, all of my tomato plants began withering

They say it’s a very destructive and infectious disease

And I shudder to think what horrors next year will bring

All one has to do is look about our natural world, today

To know it’s in trouble, yet so many still say nature is fine

As I gaze about on my travels, and even in my own backyard

I can’t understand how so many human beings, are still so blind

I dont understand how they are so blind either. I can clearly see everything and even share it with all whom I know. This type of stuff has to be looked at seriously. It the planet Earth that sustains all life and with its health and its creatures health declining it just makes it less able to sustain life. That life includes humans.

... I've been reading up this week on the Gaia Theory: that Earth is one holistic organism that is, left to her own devices, self-regulating (rather than a bunch of co-dependent organisms). We focus on the Rain Forests (and rightly so), but what about the "forests" of algae, plankton and weeds under the oceans that are AS important, if not more so, than the trees we can see? Their ability to "suck the CO2 down" is being radically challenged by the unilateral warming of the waters... Some believe it is already too late for Mother Earth to be able to correct herself, even if Man was to immediately change his ways. But don't get me started... We'll have time to lament at our leisure, I fear. But repentence on its own is not enough... might be a good start, though... Now I've lost me bounce.... :(( xx

Aw crap tomatoes?? I know much of the planet's misery has human roots. But plant blights are not necessarily human caused. True, many plant hybrids are disease prone, others are stronger. Most of our plant food grown for milleniums is the result of genetic engineering done the old fashion way. Each had its failures and successes. Patrick

Human beings don't do that do they, aliens maybe, that type that don't belong on this planet,how else could it be, it just don't make sense, 1984, has happened Orson told the truth, the problem is they look like us, or a deliberate genetic mutation. A little bird with a deformed leg is laying in a basket near me, it won't leave me, it cradles in my hand, comes toward me limping, when I let it exersice, looking for protection, it is totally unatural, the poor creature now rests near me, because it put up a huge fuss when I bed it down in the garage, now it sleeps like a baby near me. What are we doing to this world, poison everything for comfort, ours, kill all that around us, spray everything that they eat, it's sick, real humans don't do that, ....... i am having more trouble with potaoes-so far,my tomatoes are good--thanks for the awareness--there are too many of us just plowing through life with no thought to any damage left behind

Yes you are so right all the time. Our Mother Earth is screaming, why do we not hear her? Will it be too late? I ask myself this all the time. Such a wasteful world, only when it is too late will people reach out for help.
