Silent Dawn

“On the mornings that had once throbbed,

With the dawn chorus of robins, catbirds,

Doves, jays, wrens, and scores of other voices,

There was now no sound;

Only silence lay over the fields and woods and marsh…”

Rachel Carson

Music: Autumn Leaves

My dogs woke me extremely early

When we stepped out, not yet dawn

The sheer silence was so sadly striking

No bird song around my trees and lawn

I pondered this utter silence for some time

Finally realizing, Fall Migration had begun

For very many of nature’s winged wonders

Their time in the northland, was now done

And I knew immediately that I would miss them

A sudden sadness in my bird loving heart and soul

As I gazed up into the still dark and chilly night sky

I wished them all well, knowing instinct made them go

And now, I sat out in my dark yard with my dogs

Pondering the fact that many of them flew, all night

I realized that flocks of them were up there, right now

I silently gazed skyward and saw a dark shadow in flight

So many wondrous winged varieties, now heading south

So many leaving the great boreal forests of the northwood

So many heading down to much warmer climes, for winter

For a second, I thought perhaps joining them, might be good

But my intuitive dogs, now sensing my sadness, this morning

Now all huddled around me, very affectionately, on our lawn

Reminding me that I could never leave my northern homeland

And suddenly, a chorus of tiny sparrows, sang a melody to dawn

Both my dogs and these sparrows had very quickly reminded me

That not all of Earth’s creatures were heading up, off, and away

I thanked all my dogs, and filled the bird feeders for the sparrows

Then I went back inside, counting my blessings, on this autumn day

The change of seasons is a wonderful thing to share with your birdie friends and muttlies. You'll still have the cardinals, titmice, jays, sparrows and junco's to feed. (plus the squirrels will get their fill I'm sure)Patrick

Very beautifully crafted poem. visuals are great, I could see you clearly in your yard with your dogs in sheer silence...I felt your sadness, even felt crisp cold weather on my face...
I loved serenity you brought to my heart,

Missing our feathered friends is a sad part of winter. You've written about it in great style Mr. Ed. In my part of California we have many different types that stay and weather the winter with us. We are blessed.

It is getting to be that time of year, many species have left here too. We are not getting the variety at our feeders we were during the mid summer months...

Be always safe,
Karen

Great write and so true. We have such a migration of birds from here in Canada that it often seems sad to see them flying south but we can rest knowing they always return.

Ed,

Be sure when they wing their way south, I'll give them a great big howdy from Texas. And when Spring comes, I'll make sure they know the way home to your backyard. =] A lovely fall day!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

This silence my friend should give us time to reflect, to sense it now is a good thing, before it is everlasting, not just in the fall.
The way things are going, I took a step backward the other day, to actually hear a frog croack in my pond, things are getting real quiet now........... but I hear Angels, Bless you! Jasmin Horst

Oh Ed, how I missed my dog and our long beach and mountain walks with no cars, people of cell phones, wandering alone in silence we did not need to talk to each other, we knew from the go what the other was thinking.
Now I am old as he was and long walks are no more, although, if we were here I would have told my legs to stop whining and start walking.

I'm a summer person and also love the autumn...but have this almost like/dislike feeling toward it, as it's so beautiful and yet so short and it's what comes next (winter) that I'm not a fan of. Beautiful writing, Ed-

An absolutel delight, Ed! Your wonderfully crafted words provided beautiful imagery for the reader. I agree that Autumn is sad in that we miss the symphony that we hear all summer long! We always keep our bird feeders full in the Winter too. Great job!
