Inspired By Another Native American Legend;
And in Anticipation of PBS’s New Documentary,
‘The National Parks: America’s Best Idea’

Flipping through my photo albums
I came upon our journey, to Denali
A most mystical and magical mountain
One that will always remain in my memory
Many call the highest peak in North America
Mt. McKinley, named after our 25th President
I still prefer to call it Denali –‘The Great One’
It was named this, by Native American residents
I will never forget the day that we approached it
Towering over 20,000 feet high, shrouded in clouds
But we must have been blessed by the ancient spirits
The clouds suddenly parted, and I shouted out ‘Wow!’
As I then looked over at my wife, bundled in brown
I suddenly recalled an old Indian legend about Denali
An ancient hunter had come here, looking for grizzly bears
When a bear magically transformed into a maiden, instantly
Suddenly, from nowhere, thick clouds again blocked our view
And, I again looked over at my spouse, heading down the path
I swear I now saw a smiling grizzly bear, standing where she was
So, of course, I raced down the hillside, my heart beating quite fast
Evidently, the legend on my mind, and the deep mist surrounding us
Had somehow magically played some sort of trick on my eyes and mind
My Native American spouse thought it was quite hilarious, when I told her
And these days, when I call her Bear, she devilishly grins, and says I’m blind
I love old Native American Legends,
I’ve been studying them most of my life;
And the Legend about the Bear and Denali,
Captivates me, and brings amusement to my wife.
Although her heritage is Southwest Apache,
They are related to ancient Alaskan natives;
Perhaps she knows something she won’t divulge,
And these legends will intrigue me, as long as I live.
Alaska’s Denali National Park,
Truly One of America’s Great Treasures.
