“Out of the bosom of the air, out of the cloud-folds of her garments shaken,

Over the woodlands brown and bare, over the harvest-fields forsaken,

Silent, and soft, and slow, descends the snow.”

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I awoke just before sunrise

What a sight, out my window

Every single thing, now covered

With layers of sparkling white snow

It now draped my entire lawn

The treetops were now, all aglow

It must have been snowing, all night

What a marvelous, magical, mornin show

My very first thought was of shoveling it

But as I brewed my coffee, a new thought

This winter wonderland shouldn’t be wasted

Shoveling it could wait – I needed a long walk

I quickly got dressed and woke my weary wife

But she told me to please let her sleep for awhile

As I now bundled up, and I tied my old boot laces

Tater appeared with his leash, and a big canine smile

Good old Tater, the Black Labrador, is very much like me

He loves puddles, lakes, swimming, and really long walks

We enjoy each other’s company, and we both love the snow

And unlike my spouse, he never complains when I start to talk

So, it wasn’t very long at all, before he and I headed outdoors

And what a marvelous sight now greeted our appreciative eyes

Joyous old Tater and I, walked on and on, admiring the scenery

On this very chilly, but extremely lovely, Snowy Sunday Sunrise

I awoke just before sunrise,

What a sight, out my window;

Every single thing, now covered,

With layers of sparkling white snow.

Your poem reminds me, that COLD weather is definitely IMPROVED by SNOW! Unfortunately we only get the unimproved variety here. Until 1985 I enjoyed those same walks you're taking (usually in Vermont). And Happy New Year to you and your animal friends...

You do right thinking, it seems natural to you, as all things natural, shoveling can always be done, I met a turkey in the woods once in deep snow and he was shovelling, what's the world coming too?
lovely picture. Blessings! Jasmin Horst

This is absolutely gorgeous, Ed, why shovel when you can get out in the snow and enjoy its beauty? As you've done here - we may have our own Winter Wonderland if the forecasts hold true - one to three inches of snow possible tomorrow. BRING IT ON. =] Well done!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

PeeWee, you said, "...he loves puddles, lakes, swimming, and really long walks..." and it took me back when Kaiser and I used to walk, he loved poodles too but I didn't think too much of it as he tended to shake himself dry besides me instead of hundred yards away!!!

Ed,
I can feel the joy and exhilaration in your words. Hope you were able to come back to some nice hot chocolate and warm hugs from your wife.
Nice poem to wake to. All our snow is melted, we had almost a foot and the last two days it was in the 50's and raining, so there went all our white loveliness.
Have a beautiful day!!!!!
Peace, love, and light,
Amber "V"

... some of us just never lose that wonder, Dad! :)) Such was mine last February that I stepped inadvertently off the ledge of a snowbound road in the Grand Canyon - thankfully only up to my waist, so am still here to tell the tale. Keep all those tails wagging and, most importantly, intact! :)) Happy Noo Yehar! xx
