I’ve been intrigued by nature, since a boy
So many things in nature, truly fascinate me
So many things in nature, bring me much joy
Today, January 5th is ‘National Bird Day’
Birds to me are so wondrous and divine
But sadly, bird populations are in trouble
Too many bird species, are now in decline
So, I decided to pen this Ode To The Grackle
A species of bird that many consider to be a pest
But to me, Grackles are most fascinating creatures
They live out their lives, with such daring and zest
Three of them have been visiting us, for awhile
I eventually named them: Snap, Grackle, and Pop
They love strutting around my yard, eating cereal
And all three love to harass my five dogs, nonstop
My canines know when they arrive, by their shrill taunts
All five burst out into the yard, trying to chase them away
I think these three: Snap, Grackle, and Pop, are quite clever
And although not favorites of many, I salute them, this Bird Day
I also recently learned something fascinating about Grackles
They have the ability to mimic human speech, like Parrots can
Although my mutts and my spouse now think I’m really bonkers
Carrying on a conversation with Snap, Grackle, and Pop, is Grand
And like George Washington Carver said above,
I continue my study of nature’s numerous treasures;
Every stone, flower, insect, bird, and beast I encounter,
And I learn about, still continues to bring me much pleasure.
