“The sun, the moon, and the stars would have disappeared long ago,
Had they happened to be within the reach of predatory human hands.”
Havelock Ellis, The Dance of Life
As our wolves are being slaughtered
As our buffalo are killed, at Yellowstone
As wild horse flesh is being shipped overseas
We can’t even leave our vanishing birds alone
She was called #217, one of a few whooping cranes, left
Miraculously, she had produced one child named, ‘Wild One’
And, on their yearly migration, from Wisconsin down to Florida
Someone saw her standing out in a marsh, and shot her, with a gun
We say wolves eat our game, so they all must be destroyed
We say buffalo and wild horses can no longer eat our grass
And endangered species of birds, which are harming no one
Are now being shot down, on a planet, that is dying very fast
One of only two crane species which are native to North America
Only a few hundred still survive, in our apocalyptic modern world
We will not stop our relentless and utterly devastating annihilations
Until a totally nature less, ‘man only,’ desecrated planet, is unfurled
After decades of staunch conservation efforts that included using ultralight aircraft to lead these birds on their yearly migrations, the whooper population, down to only 15 remaining birds at one recent point, is one of the most endangered species in the world.
Whooping Crane #217 was a member of the eastern U.S. population of whoopers, and as a breeding female, she was a very critical part of the recovery efforts to save these amazing birds from extinction. And, her loss is an immense setback for whooping crane conservation.
Her dead carcass was identified by a leg band, and she was determined to be the mother of ‘Wild-1,’ the only whooping crane chick successfully hatched in 2006.
She and her mate were among 19 whooping cranes migrating from their summer grounds in Wisconsin to their wintering grounds in Florida, when she was hideously gunned down, on a resting stopover, in a marsh in Indiana.
As our wolves are being slaughtered,
As our buffalo are killed, at Yellowstone,
As wild horse flesh is being shipped overseas,
We can’t even leave our vanishing birds alone.
And I now very sadly wonder,
How many people will even care,
When All Is Gone.

Meanwhile I just read how in 2009, 17 panther kittens have succumbed to roadkill in SW Florida mostly. I know some may be unavoidable but somehow I imagine many modern drivers not even attempting to avoidance as they can't all be at night.
NOthing is sacred anymore but the almighty car machine and where we are in a hurry to get to. I do not begin 2010 hopeful on the "animal preservation" front.
I'll try to stop by more often... Later, Mike

The crane is an amazing point in hand. It observes its predator and against all odds it out thinks and maneuvers <--american spelling. its aggressor, except man. For some reason Mankind believes it is detached from nature, or white-man does. The Indians of the Americas could have taught us much, but we wouldn't listen a a dead buffalo is worth more dollars than a living one.
However, with the power of the net, there is no reason why a protest of the magnitude and beyond of MLK's to save the destruction of this planets life.
We did it here, at first a few who were ridiculed over fox hunting, but it gained momentum as with badgers. But it takes a catalyst to set
a change of opinion in motion.
Bless you for this write Ed! Jasmin Horst
Out of all the creatures that walk this earth, ultimately - Man is the most Feral!
The wolves, the lions, the hawks - all the 'predators' combined - do so, naturally. It is their survival skills, to hunt in order to eat, in order to continue living. Not so with Man!
In Army Basic Training, we were taught - "The Spirit of the Bayonet" -
TO KILL! TO KILL! TO KILL!
It almost makes one wish that Gunpowder and Knives had never been invented!
When will Man ever realize that he can not harness Nature, nor ever defeat it?
Perhaps a new Bumper Sticker is needed? NURTURE NATURE!
Peace - Tom.
in battlefronts around the world and in the street of our
large city metropolis, must we continue slaughtering
the innocent creatures of our shrinking wilderness
as we are ourselves....leaving behind nothing
"just scorching the earth"
what man don't know is after we destroy ourselves,
men will be no more
After we are long gone, the world will rejuvenate it self
with other forms of creatures, We'll Never Label
Peace be with you
William
