I have always been drawn to this place
Over 200,000 acres of ‘pure wilderness’
Named for a true American conservationist
The Aldo Leopold Wilderness, one of the best
He knew that in our haste to ‘progress and modernize’
Many would want to ravage and pillage, our wild lands
He also knew that America’s wild places, were treasures
His vision to save ‘wilderness’ for future generations grand
This wild wonder of a place, named for him, back in 1980
Is a place of superlative wild beauty, and unbroken serenity
Its network of deep canyons, rugged hills, and green forests
Is an ancient, natural, ‘alive,’ canvas of unadulterated beauty
Ancient home to the juniper, pinion pine, and grand old oak tree
Its many higher elevations contain majestic fir, spruce, and aspen
Numerous vista points here, look down on wild rivers and streams
Teeming with wondrous wildlife, and marvelous views without end
Home to so many different types and species of marvelous animal life
Including black bear, bobcats, mountain lions, foxes, and ring-tail cats
Dozens of varieties of multi-colored, ever melodious, forest songbirds
Frogs, lizards, snakes, squirrels, chipmunks, and always intriguing bats
Today, America needs many more conservationists, like Aldo Leopold
If we hope to maintain and cherish, such truly glorious treasures, as this
Throughout my life, I’ve been extremely grateful, for those just like him
My numerous treks to America’s Wild Wonders, always fill me with bliss
Why not discover, for yourself, the magnificent beauty,
Of America’s remaining, truly glorious, wild wonders;
And take a child with you, away from their computers,
Perhaps, in that child’s soul, a love for Nature may stir.

Heard coyotes on Sunday morning down on the street below
It would have been a thing of joy
But they were hungry
And this is not the wilderness
Very sad
