Today has been designated as National Feral Cat Day
A day for them, which is sponsored by Alley Cat Allies
The callousness which our nation displays towards them
Each and every day now, brings a tear or two to my eyes
America’s millions and millions of feral felines
Are offspring, of abandoned and neglected pets
Although we have horrendous pet overpopulation
Millions refuse to spay and neuter their own cats yet
And even worse, so called ‘pet lovers’ abandon their cats
Or, they allow them to wander, and to mate, not even caring
And because of their gross neglect and refusal to care for them
The number of stray and feral felines in America, is never ending
Well over seventy percent of the felines being born in the U.S. today
Never find a loving home, or have someone to take them off the street
So the solution we as a nation now utilize for far too many animals today
Is to now constantly round them up, kill them, and then, constantly repeat
Ever since a tiny starving kitten arrived on my dog’s backyard grave many years ago
I’ve been working with groups like Alley Cat Allies to TNR (trap/neuter/return) them
I also take in many strays and orphans that I find so desperately searching for shelter
But, there are far too few Americans who even care; so these street orphans never end
The extremely sad plight of these furry outcasts,
Is man-made, and definitely no fault of their own;
Please find it in your heart to adopt a homeless cat,
And, show it the love it deserves, in your own home.
And, if you already have a feline or two at home,
For God’s sake, please spay or neuter him or her;
And, if you happen to see a starving, wandering waif,
Please think about their plight, and let compassion stir.
The average life span of a neglected homeless feline,
Is only an extremely horrendous two and a half years;
The starving feral kitten that I took into my home that day,
Lived to be 20 – and he brought me so much love and cheer.
