“If nature were not beautiful,

It would not be worth knowing;

And if nature were not worth knowing,

Life would not be worth living.”

Henri Poincare

Even in the frigid chill of winter

Nature is very wondrous to behold

I woke early and I felt like wandering

And soon, I ventured down a river road

I had last visited here, in the summer

When the river bank was lush and fertile

Colorful wildflowers, had lined this shore

And I observed numerous ducks and turtles

Several families had been picnicking, right here

Young children had run, and laughed, and played

Now, on this extremely chilly early winter’s morning

Not a single sound in my ears in this frozen landscape

At first glance, all I saw were mounds of ice

Frigid, slow moving waters, and lots of snow

What a remarkable change, in such a short time

Since there was little to observe, I decided to go

But very luckily for me, I now saw some movement

On the far river bank, high in a snow-covered pine tree

I watched in utter fascination, as a huge bird took flight

And now, a truly majestic eagle, was soaring towards me

He very swiftly came swooping down to the water’s edge

And he very skillfully plucked out a fish with his sharp talons

I stood here, on this frozen river bank, in awe and admiration

Very thankful that in any season, Nature thrills me without end

Even in the frigid chill of winter,

Nature is very wondrous to behold;

I woke early and I felt like wandering,

And soon, I ventured down a river road.

When I lived in Alaska, an Eagle greeted me each morning at 4am when I arrived at the radio station. Perched high on a tree, he watched as I unlocked the front door and was safely inside. The Eagle would wait a few minutes then fly off for the day...I soon looked forward to meet him each morning.

Thanks for writing,
Cheers,
Dan
