You are only here for a short visit,
So don't forget to stop and smell the roses.”
Music: A Whole New World
The sense of smell, is truly amazing
It is one of our most fascinating senses
We humans, often do not appreciate ours
But animals do, their ‘smell sense,’ immense
Our recent stowaway, with his star-shaped nose
Can ‘sniff out’ anything edible, in a milli-second
Mother Nature’s gift of smell, is an incredible thing
And from my own dogs, I have learned many lessons
I always observe my dogs very closely, out in the field
When they stop to ‘taste’ the air or to ‘sniff’ the ground
Because of them, I now observe such wondrous creatures
Because they always smell those roses, wonders are found
Without them, I wouldn’t know where the red fox was hiding
I wouldn’t have seen the family of raccoons down by the shore
I wouldn’t have even glanced up, missing that bald eagle’s nest
Because of my canines, the wonders of nature, I can enjoy more
And very recently, Charlie the Terrier, got lost
His heartbroken family, searching, everywhere
In desperation, they decided to try something
Walking through the open countryside, feet bare
Good old Charlie, who had been lost for many days
Soon picked up their ‘bare foot’ scent, and followed it
And soon, good old Charlie, was back, in their backyard
The Nose Knows, and Charlie’s family now appreciates this
The sense of smell, is truly amazing,
It is one of our most fascinating senses;
We humans, often do not appreciate ours,
But animals do, their ‘smell sense,’ immense.
So get on out there, and smell those roses,
I plan on doing so, more and more each day;
Of course, I’ll be taking some of my dogs along,
Knowing they’ll sniff out something wondrous today.
