“In all things of nature,
There is something of the marvelous.”
Aristotle
Music: Evening Falls
Sunset, on the lake
They came soaring in
What a wondrous sight
A huge dragonfly squadron
They looked like tiny helicopters
Arriving here, on a mission of mercy
Roaming this Earth, for 300 million years
These aerobatic creatures, such a delight to see
Born underwater, probably quite far from this lake
Soon emerging from their birth, in the mud and sand
Then migrating, each and every Spring, just like birds
Watching the arrival of this squadron, to me, was grand
I suddenly wondered just how many miles they had flown
And, if they had a Squadron Leader that they loyally follow
As I watched them, I wondered if their ancestors roamed here
And just how many mosquitoes on this lake they would swallow
Like most of the other insects and animals that reside in this world
Dragonflies much prefer hunting over clean lakes, rivers, and ponds
Each and every Spring, when I see them return to this particular lake
I am now grateful, because of this little northern lake, I am quite fond
There are about 2,500 different species of these marvelous insects
They are true masters of the sky, and they can fly 60 miles an hour
I waved at them, welcomed them back, and wished all of them well
Captivated by these tiny wonders, and by Nature’s genius and power
Sunset, on the lake,
They came soaring in;
What a wondrous sight,
A huge dragonfly squadron.
