“Reading about nature is fine,

But if a person walks in the woods and listens carefully,

He can learn more than what is in books,

For they speak with the voice of God.”

George Washington Carver

I’m heading up the road, again

These days, I have a restless soul

Perhaps, it’s my nature loving heart

Perhaps, I know too soon, comes cold

And, as always, I’ll be traversing, the back roads

There is no spectacular scenery, on the Interstates

I’d rather take my time, on less traveled country lanes

To gaze upon the glorious wooded hillsides, I can’t wait

To perch beside a serene wildwood lake, with my canines

To gaze upon a magical setting sun, just beyond the trees

To joyously wander, through a meadow full of wildflowers

To wade into an enchanting babbling brook, up to my knees

To gaze upon a magnificent old moose, or a family of forest foxes

To listen to a chorus of singing birds, and their soothing serenades

To wander down a pine-studded trail, without another soul around

To take a nap under a towering old oak, so very grateful for its shade

To journey amongst our ancient, wondrous, natural, woodlands

Before they are defiled and destroyed, by ‘modern day progress’

I have never been very impressed, with what mankind has created

To me, Creation’s many ancient marvels, have always been the best

I’m heading up the road, again,

These days, I have a restless soul;

Perhaps, it’s my nature loving heart,

Perhaps, I know too soon, comes cold.

Great visuals. Your poem captures the essence of country . To be in touch with nature and all that surrounds is a gift that some take forgranted, or some don't see sometimes. Yes , fall is on it's way!....M

Have a wonderful time, Ed. I just recounted so many of my past moments in nature's loving embrace as I read your words. Freedom resides where man has not yet consumed nature.
Take care,
Sherry

I so "get" your feelings about nature and being out in the countryside, Ed! There's no place like it....solace for the soul...like nothing else! Have a great trip!

Truly gorgeous!
The reader is suspended between enthusiasm and a desire for protecting the earth.

"...a restless soul..." knows
what natural beauty is
and is restless because it's under threat
but restless, too, because it senses the attraction
and can't resist the draw.
Your spirit is here, Ed.
