“In the country, the darkness of night is friendly and familiar,

But in a city, it is unnatural, hostile, and menacing.”

W. Somerset Maugham

It’s midnight, and it’s cold and raining

In another alley, in another part of town

I am searching for another homeless dog

But tonight, only somber silence is found

A frightened young dog has been seen here

Desperately searching for food in the trash

“You think you might be able to trap him?

He’s scared of everyone, and runs very fast.”

Suddenly, a bright light penetrates the dark

A police vehicle comes racing into the alley

“Please step out of your vehicle immediately,

And keep your hands up, where we can see!”

I explain to the police officers why I’m out here

And I tell them I was sent by one of their brethren

“Yeah, we’ve spotted that brown mutt here ourselves,

But we see so many lately; this will probably never end.”

The two policemen soon drive off into the night

And I’m left standing in this cold alley, all alone

That’s when I hear a muted noise by the dumpster

I hear something whimpering, then a muffled groan

The being making these noises is a skinny young shepherd

He’s extremely weak, and can’t seem to stand on his own

I pull him out, and I drive him to the emergency animal clinic

They treat him while I call the concerned officer on the phone

“I've found the starving dog you’ve been seeing in that alley,

The vet says he’s got a broken leg, but thinks that he’ll be ok.”

The police officer thanks me and says that he’ll pay the vet bill

I drive home, sadly wondering, who’ll be calling me next today

It hurts me so much to read these stories but we all need to read them and take them to heart.I hope he finds a loving home.

Powerful writing, Ed; no animal deserves this (or any human, for that matter) .... we can learn so much from our animal friends and from loving, caring, compassionate souls such as yourself! Well done!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Texas, Karen Lynn. :(

Such a tragic story, Ed! Bless that precious little animal....my heart bleeds with every sad tale of poor neglected pets...cast aside like they're nothing.....There's no end to the cruelty of humans! But thankfully there are people like you out there.....

It never ends, Ed, does it?
Our neglect goes on and on.
Shame!
