Music: We Need a Little Christmas
This was old Trucker’s very first Christmas with us
Since I brought him home, from that frigid truck yard
Where he had been freezing, starving, and so all alone
Where life for this abandoned dog, had been quite hard
At first, he didn’t know what to make of all the toys
That all of our other dogs and cats were playing with
At first, he stood off to the side, just observing them
He found it very difficult, to join in, their Christmas bliss
Most of our other pets, raced around the house and yard
Delighting in their plush new squeak toys and rubber balls
It was as if old Trucker had forgotten how to romp and play
For several hours, he stood off to the side, observing them all
But eventually, it was as if some distant memory from his past
Had finally kicked in, and when our other pets decided to sleep
I watched with wonderment as he soon began collecting them up
And, he carried them to his blanket, piling them up, in a huge heap
And soon, he began picking up and playing with every one of them
And when he finally realized that he, too, could make them all squeak
He began racing all around the house, as if he were a young pup again
He played for hours, while tears of Christmas joy rolled down my cheek
Somehow, not only for Christmas,
But all the long year through,
The joy that you give to others,
Is the joy that comes back to you.
