What a joy it has been
This year’s Early Spring
I’ve been observing ‘Wild’
So many wonders it brings
I’ve been rising before the dawn
With my binoculars and my dogs
Heading off to a nearby woodland
Glad to be outdoors perched on a log
Our wetlands and our marshes, are already in bloom
Their vibrant wildflowers, now bursting from the ground
So many different types of magnificent ‘wild’ life forms
It doesn’t take very long, before another wonder is found
Besides the delightful garter snake that we encountered
At a marsh drinking, stood a white-tail deer and her fawn
From a rock in a creek, a large box turtle gazed back at us
My dogs were mesmerized by a crow, cawing to us at dawn
Just the other morning, so very bright and early
We spotted a pair of Yellow-Headed Blackbirds
They had stopped at this wetland to rest for awhile
Their song and their brilliant color, far beyond words
And yesterday morning, we had a marvelous encounter
At first light, we suddenly heard “Pee Wee! Pee Wee!”
The melody of an Eastern Wood PeWee in a nearby tree
Our visitor had recently left his winter home, in the Andes
What an incredible journey, for such a creature, so very tiny
Now winging his way from South America to the Northwood
And what a joy, hearing him singing out his exuberant greeting
“Pee Wee! Pee Wee!” so full of life, and so magnificently good
What a joy it has been,
This year’s Early Spring;
I have been observing ‘Wild’,
So many wonders it did bring.
