Or perhaps, even set on fire. Who could do such a thing?”

Who could do such a thing
The answer is, we humans
The horror stories continue
I now doubt they’ll ever end
Pet Rescuers all across America
Are now finding dogs like this one
Our abysmal apathy is now growing
Our compassion and our caring is done
This suffering, throw-away, canine, has Mange
This awful disease, has been eating away her face
I so sadly wonder how many saw her, and did nothing
What horrendous shame has now befallen our human race
Very luckily for this dog, she was finally found by the right person
Who compassionately got her needed medical attention right away
This canine had been someone’s loyal companion and faithful friend
Instead of getting her some help, they simply abandoned her one day
Who could do such abysmal things to Man’s Best Friend?
The horrific answer these days is far too many of we humans
These god-awful neglect and abuse stories, are increasing
And I, for one, now very sadly doubt that they will ever end
Not that long ago, I myself, found a canine
That was lying in a curb, riddled with mange
So I picked him up and I put him in my truck
And the many passers-by thought I was strange
Just last week, on a busy California thoroughfare
A loyal dog stood guard over her run-down friend
I had tears in my eyes watching dozens of motorists
So very callously passing right by them, without end
And very often today, when I’m chasing a left behind
I think I’m in some impoverished, third world country
The apathy of our nation towards its suffering residents
Now brings feelings of immense shame and sorrow to me
