A Very Sad Follow-Up To My Last Poem,

‘Little Lost Soul’

“I saw ‘Rags’ on the News,

And I just have to have him!

Please put him on an airplane,

And send him to me – right away!”

Music: Total Eclipse of The Heart

We are so sadly such a blind nation today

Most people cannot see what is happening

There are thousands of dogs, just like ‘Rags’

All across America, in every single community

But very few want to help save these street orphans

Or, the millions of dogs on Death Row, in the pounds

Unless a dog like Rags is featured on the national news

Very few people stepping forward to help, can be found

While news helicopters and reporters in vans chased Rags

Two of my fellow pet rescuers, were only a few miles away

They were trying to rescue another starving, abandoned dog

But no one seemed to care, or tried to assist them, in any way

The helicopters and news reporters even followed me to the vet

And despite all of my efforts to address other dogs just like Rags

The only starving, abandoned dog in America anyone cared about

Was little Rags, and this abysmal fact truly makes we rescuers sad

We have received over 100 calls and e-mails from people, about Rags

They all want to adopt him, and most of them got upset, when told ‘No’

We’ve told people in Texas, Florida, New York, Boston, and Kansas City

They should adopt a canine near them; to their local shelters they should go

When we pet advocates rescue so many other abandoned dogs today

It so very sadly takes us six months or more, to find them a new home

People need to start thinking about the homeless dogs in their own areas

Right in their very own neighborhoods, dogs just like little Rags, now roam

While thousands of other canines are starving on the streets of America today

Or, are languishing in the kill shelters and pounds, where they will be euthanized

We as a nation sadly only seem to see the needy dogs flashed across TV screens

Please Wake Up America; Help A Dog In Your Hometown; Open Your Eyes

“Turn around, every now and then,

I get so lonely, and you’re never coming around;

Turn around, every now and then,

I get so very terrified, just look into my eyes;

And I need you now, tonight,

And I need you now, more than ever.”

Sad as Ronald said. This shows how the mind of today´s people work. They cannot even help starving children unless a famous actor or actress vist them in their refugee camps. Thanks dear Ed for your love to nature as well as your persistent and tireless effort to rescue dogs.

That truly is sad. People want to be associated with fame. Get their picture flashed on the TV for being the hero that took on the dog on TV. You are right. In my neighborhood, we have fenced yards, several of which contain barking guard dogs. It is my bet that most of them are sorely neglected. Such is the state of affairs when we treat our fellow creatures like grocery store commodities that we can use and throw away like so much junk.

Fortunately here, we don't have our strays suffer, they are immediately found or picked up by a concerned citizen to include myself. It seems to run rampant in your area more so than others. I'm sure other areas have the same problem as well though. My heart breaks each time I hear about another sad story. It is my hope that many get involved in your area to help out.

Thankfully in our city here in New Brunswick, Canada, one NEVER sees a stray dog. That doesn't mean our SPCA isn't overcrowded with dogs and cats that need homes though....I wouldn't even consider having a dog or cat that I didn't rescue! All of my pets are amazing!!!! They have given me far more than I could have dreamed of....

It is totally sad that this happens not only in the animal kingdom but in all aspects of life, I know from being a charity fundraiser it was always the higher profile causes that got the most donations while the lessers ones had to struggle.

Such a shallow species, those that only want to be 'known' for their good deeds rather than actually taking pleasure from doing them.

News and the media seem to be the thing. Perhaps we can name all the abandon dogs "Rags" and see that that would bring.

shelter dogs make wonderful companions. son and family just got their little joy bringing girl, she was in her last day at a kill shelter when the local no kill stepping in, and brought her to their facility moments before son and family arrived. it was and continues to be love at first sight.

she is a tiny bundle of love.
