“You will find something more in woods than in books.
Trees, and stones, and birds, will teach you,
That which you can never learn from masters.”
St. Bernard
I first came across ‘Hoot’
Two very cold winters ago
I stopped to gaze up at him
He gazed back, into my soul
Now, I always search for him
Whenever I wander the wood
We two never converse much
But I find his company very good
He seems to seek me out more often
Whenever I wander without my dogs
He will then usually wait for me here
High in a limb, above my favorite log
I then perch here, looking up at him
He looks down at me, from his tree
I now wonder what he is thinking about
Perhaps, he wonders the same about me
Perhaps, he knows I love these woods
Just as much as he most certainly does
Perhaps, he wonders about we humans
And why we destroy, the things he loves
Perhaps, he has even been sent to remind me
That this planet, belongs to more than we humans
Perhaps, he might even be a wood spirit in bird form
Sent to look deep into the hearts and souls of we men
Each and every time that I now visit here with ‘Hoot’
I think of the old Indian proverb, that Owls are Omens
Sighting one in the daylight, was thought to be very bad
Foretelling of bad days to come, of death and destruction
The extremely sad plight of the wild creatures of the Earth today
Now makes me sadly wonder, what will now lie ahead, for us all
As I gaze into Hoot’s eyes, I can see both wisdom and sadness
But I thank God for all my encounters with wildlife, great and small
I first came across ‘Hoot,’
Two very cold winters ago;
I stopped to gaze up at him,
He gazed back, into my soul.

Yes, owls are special. They seem so distant and remote.
I am sure that's what helps them to survive.
Others might say they just don't give a hoot.
Happy New Year in advance...

As birds of the night and prey, the owl symbol has been associated with psychic powers, the angel of death and the goddess of night. Owls represent spiritual influence, wisdom and knowledge in Greece, Rome, and in Celtic mythology. As a nocturnal creature this bird symbolizes inner-knowing, psychic ability, and intuition, it is considered by many cultures as a messenger between earth and the heavenly spirit.
The owl is still considered a witch's companion because they share unique spiritual communication, the same secret powers of the night and witches use them when calling other witches. In the recent world, the owl symbol is used to symbolize education and it is often graduation mascot. Many cultures associated owl with the following: intelligence, brilliance, wisdom, power and knowledge. This bird has a gift of heightened senses which enables it see through deception, illusion, external appearances and to find hidden truths.
People who have drawn owls or owl symbols are said to have the same ability to uncover secrets. People will tend to be uneasy around you because they assume that you are able to see through them. The bird teaches us to accept the dark side of our personality and that we can always find food in the darkness.
