“Tell me what you feel in your room,

When the full moon is shining in on you,

And your lamp is dying out.”

Henri Frederic Amiel

The month of February’s Full Moon

By some, was called ‘Snow Moon’

As I sit here tonight, gazing up at it

I eventually spot a starving raccoon

He is out there tonight, scavenging

In the winter, it is difficult to find food

So, I toss him a few dinner leftovers

Which immediately brightens his mood

Many Native Americans called this Full Moon

‘Hunger Moon’ because finding food was so tough

On a cold blustery February night, such as this one

I realize, that these days, life for many, is very rough

Many have also become extremely selfish and spoiled

And with our dwindling food sources, far too gluttonous

To answer Henri Amiel’s question, I am feeling quite sad

That tonight, there are so many hungry souls, out among us

What will you be feeling in your room,

When you gaze up at tonight’s Hunger Moon?

Both instructive, as usual, and very poignant. So many raccoons have resorted to garbage cans as a source of food. I've learned that they like to wash their food. I don't know how they do that in the dead of winter.

An inquisitive racoon in his mask of mystery seeks your
kindness. 'Snow moon' of endearing hunger for so many people
in our country. A tearful journey for so many.

Living against a mountain, as I do, there is a family of racoons that visit my cat's bowl often. Of course the cat lets me know, in no uncertain terms, that her vittles have been shared, so...out with the bag of kibble for 2nds. Nice reminder of how fortunate we are as a species living in this country, even though our hunger problems continue with little policy change from Washington to help.

It really is sad so many are homeless and hungry...but at least humans can reach out and someone somewhere will take their hand...starving animals are not so fortunate and it breaks my heart...

GREAT poetic message Ed! Also many people are hungry and homeless in our country in the winter. I work with many ministries and one seasoned minister told me that there is help available for almost every need. The problem is that they either do no know or they don't want to ask. I don't think that is the case for stray animals. If you have food, they will come for sure.

God bless you for all that you do.

John Michael
