“Here is the ghost of a summer,

That lived for us;

Here is a promise,

Of the next summer to be.”

William Ernest Henley

The day had dawned, so magnificently

Summer’s Ghost, was lingering in the air

I quickly woke my spouse from her slumber

“Honey, get dressed; we have to get out there.”

And soon, we headed down a tiny forested trail

Nature’s magnificent colors, were still on display

Our dogs had quickly decided to tag along with us

They instinctively knew, this was a momentous day

And now, here we stood, surrounded by forest trees

And the wondrous colors of Autumn’s glorious show

Summer’s Ghost was leading the birds in a symphony

Its tune was bittersweet, before the arrival of first snow

As we slowly and joyfully walked on through the woods

Summer’s Ghost reminded us, of many happy memories

Of days and nights, we had visited here, all summer long

Of all the very pleasant times, spent here among the trees

Of all those relaxing little picnic lunches, down by the stream

Of all those lovely afternoons, we spent slumbering in the sun

Of all those early mornings, I had gone wandering with my dogs

Of all those glorious sunsets, we’d watched as the day was done

We spent several wondrous hours here with Summer’s Ghost

Before a very chilling Winter’s Wind now began to blow our way

Summer’s Ghost then so very sadly bid us Adieu, and drifted off

“Farewell, Old Friend; we hope to see you once again, come May.”

As you bade farewell to one season, Oregon seems to not know what it wants--more summer, finish fall, or bring some winter surprises early. So, like you, I spent some thought time with seasons' personality...at least winter's. Given my NY, LA and now Oregon experience, "White is Black" was inevitable. Thanks for bringing me back to some color I so appreciate, especially here.

That ghost is real... and very enjoyable. So many city folk never get to see a scene like you have posted.

This is a fantastic write! Your ode to the passing of summer was a treat to these eyes. Summer is gone now, but the memories linger on only to be replaced by the beauty and splendor of the fall months. A nostalgic trip that I shared with you! More, please!
