Poem Artwork
-->-And Yet More Snow Expected This Week-

“I frequently tramped eight or ten miles,
Through the deepest snow,
To keep an appointment,
With a beech-tree, or a yellow birch,
Or an old acquaintance among the pines.”

Henry David Thoreau

The sixty plus inches of snow this year
Has not yet broken our snow record
But my spouse now believes our walk
To the grocery store, was quite absurd

Our dogs woke us up at about 4 AM
They all wanted to frolic, in the snow
But our backdoor wouldn’t even open
So we had to dig it out, don’t you know

It often now takes us most of the day
To dig our vehicles, out of our garage
About twenty inches of snowdrift, out there
With sub-zero arctic winds – what a barrage

And wouldn’t you know it, we were now out of milk
And my dogs were all pouting – no more Milkbones
I told my spouse, we should walk to the grocery store
I told her it would be fun, and I didn’t want to go alone

I informed her that Mr. Thoreau would often walk many miles
Through the deep snowdrifts, just to visit with his favorite trees
I told her, that it would be good exercise, and quite invigorating
I guess I got carried away and I told her how romantic it would be

I am very lucky I guess, that she was still in a Snowy Stupor
She had forgotten, the grocery store was quite a distance away
I tried to convince her, that we should sing while we trudged on
But I think that she’ll be giving me ‘The Silent Treatment’ today

At least my slobbering canines are all extremely happy now,
As they are all now joyously chomping away, on their treats;
“Uh, Sweetie, can you please hurry up and finish your breakfast,
We have to dig out the garage again, now won’t that be really neat?!”

But If I Know My Spouse, She’ll Be Goin Back to Bed

Ah snow. Hadn't experienced it for many years. Just moved to Missouri last month and we got snowed in the first week. Not a problem though and it didn't last too long. Beats the crap out of LA.

Nice humor in this poetic song. Walking in a winter wonderland? Singing while I shovel? Well at least you don't have to deal with Florida bugs.

I am still looking for that perfect paradise...but I think I got lost.

Love the dogs attitude. Can we train them to shovel? LOL

lol, very nice. Made me chuckle. A true image of this winter, but you're braver than I am trudging through the snow.

It sure is interesting how the dogs seem to love snow when they have such a hard time walking through the soft stuff. It probably helps kill their fleas and other itchIes. Sounds like a whole lot of fun up in your neck of the city.

Reminds me of the time we were snowbound and ran out of everything. Finally my mother and grandfather waded out to the road and then crawled on the top of the 10 foot drift over the road to the main highway, to a little store a couple of miles away that seemed like forever. Those were the days.

Will your dogs share the milk bones if you run out of food?
An Enjoyable Read. In bed sounds like the best place to be.
Warm wishes,

The UK hasn't had snow like that for more than 40 years. I remember it drifting against the house, almost as high as the front door. We were digging it away and taking bucketfuls up the stairs to throw from the bedroom windows, until we reached the road.

Great write, Ed.
